The bustling metropolis of Gotham City is in danger! The Joker, that Clown Prince Of Crime, is hatching another dastardly scheme! Stalwart Police Commissioner Gordon reacts swiftly by summoning Batman and Robin via the Bat-phone! The Caped Crusader and The Boy Wonder dash to the Batmobile, that technological marvel, and speed out of the Batcave, turbines blazing, tires screeching, heading at top speed to protect Gotham City!

The iconic ABC television series created by William Dozier. Starring Adam West and Burt Ward, the series was a campy take on the adventures Bruce Wayne/Batman featuring the comic’s most famous villains portrayed by some of the biggest stars of the decade. The famous Batmobile was customized by the legendary George Barris from a one-off Lincoln Futura concept car.

A classic of '60s design. I wish I could drive one in real life, as my everyday car.

Are those street-legal? I read that the owner of one of the originals would get ticketed for trying to drive it. One of the reasons was no side-view mirrors.

When I was a kid riding shotgun with my mom (back in the days before you had to be in a car-seat until the age of 14), she used to yell at me to keep my hands in the car because I'd have one arm out clutching the door frame in imitation of Robin doing the same with the Batmobile's canopy.

Best TV/movie car ever.

I think so. When I was a kid in the '70s, that was the star of the show as far as I was concerned. I was always hoping to catch the rerun that's in the video above, with the parachutes and the Bat-rays.

When I was four, my mom and dad took me to a car show. The 1966 Batmobile was there. My mom took a picture of me "driving" it. We were told by the guy who brought it that it was the actual one used in the show, but given the number of replicas that have appeared in the years since, I have my doubts.

I'm sure if you owned one you could mount some side-mirrors magnetically and pull them off when you didn't need to the car to be bat-street legal. I think one of the reasons it's still popular is that the Futura was designed by real automotive designers, not movie or TV designers, so it has that particular design expertise in spades, which shines through all the modifications.
