Couldn't find a section for comics, could that be a thing?
Anyway, I'll be brief. This was a good book. It's been a long time since a #1 got me out to the shop (on Wednesday too!), but I was a fan of Fraction's Casanova and Jimenez has earned his place in the Hall of Good Batman Artists, so a fresh-ish start with a solid team had me sold. I think White Knight #1 last got me this excited (it was meh).
But how did it stack up to reading? I felt excited after I was DONE reading it too! Batman (vol 1) #655, Batman & Robin (vol 1) #1, Batman (vol. 2) #1. They're all "perfect" first Batman issues of the 21st century, and this one joins the ranks (let's forget Vol 3).
You know what I liked? A solid one and done issue that not only sets up the tone perfectly but also teases a little foreshadowing.
Jimenez uses himself as a photo reference for Batman, and I appreciate artists who have a solid sense of dynamic anatomy. The dude knows how to draw. Think an anime influenced Neal Adams. Only Larraz and Mora compare in the millennial gen (my gen) of comic artists to Jimenez. But it's his "camera work" (for lack of a better term) that elevates him above even Capullo's debut issue. I am so insanely jealous of Jimenez, for so many things, but his ability to draw Batman, is probably the one I envy most. His relaunch of Batman is even more of a success, artistically, than Lee's return (who I think is grossly overrated anyway). Also, Jimenez is fast, so here's hoping for a solid run that's both long lasting, and on schedule. I'm actually excited about issue 2.
I missed Alfred so much, I don't care if he's a Force Ghost.
It's a great first issue.
