Bare breast campaign

Do you think this is a good idea/bad idea for a campaign? Is it exploitative?

WOMEN are being encouraged to post photos of their breasts online in a controversial campaign raising money for cancer research in NZ.
This afternoon, more than 60 photographs of breasts - including bare, bikini-clad and breastfeeding ones - had been posted on the "I've got a lovely pair" promotion, launched by the nzgirl website.
The campaign caused the website to crash on Wednesday afternoon, with people flocking to the online magazine aimed at women in their 20s and 30s.
For every 50 "sets of boobs" uploaded, nzgirl promised to donate $NZ1000 ($776) to breast cancer awareness, up to the value of $NZ5000 ($3,883), though a specific recipient organisation has not yet been chosen and the campaign is not supported by the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.
Website editor-in-chief Tee Twyford told AAP they wanted to do something "a little bit different in a noisy environment".
"There's lots of fantastic initiatives that do happen ... but hardly any of them mention boobs," she said.
"(This campaign is about) being proud of your breasts and being aware of them."
Feedback on the website was mixed today, with readers taking a strong stand on either side.
Maggie called the campaign "ignorant, exploitative and truly offensive". Emma said it was "disgraceful", while K said it was a "really creepy idea".
Meanwhile, others posted positive comments, like josiebrennan who uploaded a photograph and wrote: "These are my breasts, and I'm going to participate in a campaign which challenges people to think about breast cancer".
Some readers felt the initiative was pornographic.

Rest of story here
I tried to look at the website but it looks like the site is too busy (no wonder there).

Well, obviously I can't really say without seeing the pictures (;)), but I'm assuming it's just more or less anatomical photos with the heads cropped off which is hardly pornographic or anything.

Pornographic is a bit extreme. Anyone who posts that opinion has some problems they need to get help with.

I think women have sent topless photos of themselves in so they would be showing their faces especially as not all the photos are of bare-breasted women - some are wearing bikinis, others ae of breastfeeding mothers.

I don't see it being much different to those elderly women who pose naked for calendars that are sold for charity.

Breast cancer has a nasty habit of killing people I love; if these people want to raise money for research and disseminate pictures of boobies it's a win-win and I'm 110% behind it.

I think this is a great idea. Women should be proud of themselves and this is the perfect way to raise money for breast cancer research.

These cranks who think that women are obscene or that sexuality equals sexism are an embarrassment in the 21st Century. Women's Lib was supposed to have cured that kind of primitive thinking forty years ago.

Finally got the site to work and it's just as harmless as I thought; almost all the photos don't show the women's heads, many aren't nude (probably the majority, but I didn't count), some are sort of artistically shot, some are funny (#56 ) and when you click on the picture, the women say something about their boobs and why they support the cause, like this on a picture of a woman with a baby sucking on each of her breast:
They’ve served admirably for their actual purpose, feeding children. Still feeding 14-month-old twins.

I think the campaign is funny and obviously it's effective at raising awareness.

I don't find it so much offensive (as in, not at all), but ineffective. People seem to mistake "shocking" and "buzz worthy" for effective advocacy. Dude, just donate the $5000. Is anybody going to be motivated to get a mammogram? Or get screened for BRAC1 or 2? Yes, it "titillating" (and yeah, I went there), but so what? This, along with the boobie bracelets just make people think they're doing something about breast cancer. Really, is there anyone at this point who ISN'T aware that breast cancer exists?

Problem is, it isn't fundraising. The women who post their photos aren't donating the money, the one who started it is, so she could just go ahead and donate it on her own. Not to mention that she hasn't even stated whom she's donating the money to, so we don't even know whether it's a legitimate organization.

:techman: You took the rest of the words right out of my mouth, Bluedana.

FYI, everyone, heart disease kills far more women than breast cancer does. But the heart disease awareness campaign (http://www.goredforwomen.org/index.aspx) never gets the kind of attention breast cancer awareness does. I guess hearts aren't sexy enough. :(

Who gives a shit? Money is money regardless of who donates it. This person has chosen to tie their donation to a public awareness effort. Given the fact that we're talking about it I'd say it's working. Are they going to donate to a legitimate organization? Since it's a charitable effort why don't we just give them the benefit of the doubt?

As to your point about heart disease, you're absolutely right that it's a serious issue that should be fought for. Sadly, we humans are fragile creatures and the shocking news is more than one malady can kill us. So go support heart disease research and don't deny anyone else their pet cause.

Interesting, controversial, Yes,but pornographic?

Anyone that thinks that the pictures included are pornographic needs to see a therapist... or goto a real pornographic website for research...

Couldn't the same be said for those who run marathons related to charity? Why not have the people just donate the money instead of having people run first?

Yes, it can raise money, but the question is: anyone really proud they raised money to cancer research by posting pictures of their boobies? Like there isn't some other way to do it?

And where's the hot university/college girls in support of this? :p

People who run marathons are going to run them anyway. The fundraiser part, getting sponsors, etc., is a pain in the butt add on. It's not the same as someone getting other people to show their breasts on a web site (something they wouldn't otherwise do, one would hope) so that she will donate her own money -- she could just, as TZ says, donate the money on her own.

What a stupid statement. We're supposed to call it "boob" cancer? Just because we're not using a childish slang word for our body parts, we're not "proud" or "aware"?

I'm always for bare breasts. If this was a fundraiser for the Coalition to Destroy Kommander and Everything He Cares About, I'd still be for it.

In the words of Rodney Carrington: "There's no such thing as a bad breast, I believe this much is true, if you're a big fat man, well, I'm a titty fan and I'd love to see yours too."

In Australia, schools participate in the Jump Rope for Heart and I believe that the same program runs in America. I think that this campaigns means that heart disease awareness is on par to breast cancer awareness especially as we also have companies in Australia trying to get the Heart Foundation's Tick on their products and many people do look for the tick on products they buy.

In American, are kids are so fat they have heart attacks. If they jumped rope for heart disease awareness, they'd have heart attacks.
