More women needing cash go from jobless to topless

From jobless to topless: As economy worsens, more women give strip clubs, adult films a try

CHICAGO (AP) -- As a bartender and trainer at a national restaurant chain, Rebecca Brown earned a couple thousand dollars in a really good week. Now, as a dancer at Chicago's Pink Monkey gentleman's club, she makes almost that much in one good night.

The tough job market is prompting a growing number of women across the country to dance in strip clubs, appear in adult movies or pose for magazines like Hustler.

Employers across the adult entertainment industry say they're seeing an influx of applications from women who, like Brown, are attracted by the promise of flexible schedules and fast cash. Many have college degrees and held white-collar jobs until the economy soured.

"You're seeing a lot more beautiful women who are eligible to do so many other things," said Gus Poulos, general manager of New York City's Sin City gentleman's club. He said he got 85 responses in just one day to a recent job posting on Craigslist.

The transition to the nightclub scene isn't always a smooth one -- from learning to dance in five-inch heels to dealing with the jeers of some customers.

Some performers said they were initially so nervous that only alcohol could calm their nerves.

"It is like giving a speech, but instead of imagining everyone naked, you're the one who's naked," Brown, 29, said.

Heh heh heh job security.

Hello Google, good bye job.

Seriously, based on what my wife experienced, and stories from her friends... anyone considering a career in "adult entertainment" needs a serious reality check.

At best it's a job... you go to work, get fucked by a bunch of strangers, paycheck comes on Friday... Just like any other job really.

At worst you get exploited, used, abused and tossed aside without anything to show except mental and physical scars and a reputation.

OK I call absolutely shenanigans on this latest "recession trend" story. A poor job market or unemployment does not suddenly inspire college-educated career women to take their clothes off at strip joints or have sex with complete strangers on camera to make money.

The only "sources" quoted in the story are all in the adult industry, who are NOTORIOUS for hyping this sort of thing. If you ask them, every stripper on the pole is in law school and every adult film actress is just paying their way through medical school. Other than one anecdote from one strip club about a lot of applicants at a job fair, there is absolutely no evidence to support any sort of real nationwide "trend" of women in large numbers rushing into the sex industry because of the economy.

Clearly, we need to do our own research.

Well there's also the issue of applying for the job and following through with it. Yes, there MIGHT be more women considering this and showing up at job fairs and applying, but how many actually follow through? And I would think the ones that do were probably already inclined to do it any way.

I call hogwash. As Plecostomus said, it's nothing more than a job... and like any job out there you have good employers and bad ones.

Unlike a traditional job this is something that thanks to modern media will follow you around forever. You cannot escape it now. Say you have a bad experience at an insurance company... you can edit your resume to cover that gap.

With Adult Entertainment all it takes is someone coming across your photos/videos in google and BAM your reputation is ruined. It doesn't have to be done intentionally, someone could be looking for "Squishy Redhead Bikini Models" and come across your pictures... and they show a coworker, and that coworker shows another coworker, next thing you know the gossip is flying, people are talking and everything is ruined forever.

Then there are the sleezeball outfits like I was involved in. I did some rather... intresting... stuff on video... I signed a contract... I filmed... the film was edited... released on VHS and on the website...

...and I never saw a dime. I was promised by contract cash for the days I filmed and a cheque when the materials were released. Instead, I got to talk to an answering machine.

In a very short period of time I came to discover my materials being used by other sites, despite having signed an exclusive-use contract... meaning that one company had my images and they couldn't sell it without permission.

Long story short, my complaints to the company went unanswered, and after about six months we discovered that the company "no longer existed."

That's when me and 14 other women got together pooled our money and sued the owner of the company, then turned around and went after the clearinghouses he sold our materials to.

Didn't get rich or anything, but I do have exclusive control of my materials and likeness now... there is a small chance that something may be floating around out there but at this point the majority of it is under lock and key never to see the light of day again.

Tell you one thing I find any of it out there I will drop the hammer on them. If you aren't going to pay me for my likeness you will get a visit from my lawyer.

I'm sure there's likely a bit of an influx in "talent" but if women are dropping their drawers wholesale across the continent I sure haven't noticed.

I would think it'd be an issue of posterity, as TheWifeOfBrian said. Maybe there's some more dancers but that usually doesn't involve something on video your grandkids could see. The vast majority of women wouldn't be okay with that.

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

I'm disgusted by this. Never been a fan of strip clubs anyway.

And aside from that I have known a lot of lazy assed girls, especially this generation, and I can assure you a number of these girls doing porn and stripping for money havent' actualyl tried to get a job, but instantly took the easier route because it was easier.

That's better money than I make in programming already! Why would someone making that amount even consider changing jobs?

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

Bartenders make their money from tips. Bad economy, no tips. Though arguably, strippers make their money from tips as well.

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

I don't understand why people would pay for porn - I'd rather watch two gifted amateurs who've uploaded their own video than some broad with big hair and fake nails faking it...

I call hogwash.

Me too.

It was released on both VHS and their website?

I guess we're calling hogwash on different things then...

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

Over what? The fact that someone was still using VHS in 1999?

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

WOW! ''TheWifeOfBrian'' That really sucks.:( I personaly never understood why somebody would put them selves thru that type of hell? Have you ever seen the documentery called ''Sell me your soul" After seeing that I can tell you that the porn ''industry'' is everything, but ''glamurous''

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

I read a story where a couple did a sex scene for a web site, they gave the check to the guy who was in massive debt and wouldn't share with the girl. The girl was also under the impression that their scene would only be on the web site for a short while, not realizing that even if they did take it down (yeah, right), it's online forever because of however many people downloaded it and are sharing it.

Re: Bad economy = more women in strip clubs, adult magazines, adult mo

It makes sense. Even in a weak economy, people still need the basic necessities, so there is always money there.

I agree, and this economy isn't near as bad as the double-dip recession of the early 1980's.

Which is why you always get all the money up front. Or don't do it at all. Or don't expect to get paid. Have none of these people ever heard of "escrow"?
