Kind of a dead-ball vs. live-ball era comparison. Ruth is better in pretty much every offensive stat you care to look at, but Cobb had an amazing career. Led the league in batting 11 times and SB six times, and his numbers stayed right up there even after 20 years in the majors. And 295 triples! But still, Ruth was pretty clearly better. Plus Cobb was such a miserable son of a bitch it's hard to vote for him for anything.
There is a house that Ruth built but then there is a Ty Cobb award. Ruth has been a character in more movies, but a biopic of Cobb was made relatively recently. What do I know I never saw either play nor anybody they played against in an actual game. I do know the steroid induced hitters of the last generation are still compared to Ruth and few modern players are compared to Cobb
Well, it's pretty hard to make comparisons from today to the dead-ball era, when a dozen homers could lead the league.
The changes baseball underwent between 1918 and 1920 were probably the most rapid and drastic in the history of the game.
Ruth, he was an amazing pitcher as well as a home run hitter.
I don't recall the source but it seemed that late n his career that Cobb had made a statement along the lines that he could have been a home run hitter had he known how much people would value it. Afterwards he went on some ridiculous HR streak and then promptly went back to his usual hitting style after he had proved the point.
