B5 Complete DVDs - overpriced?

I'm mainly curious about something, as I like to buy collections sometimes. I was in my local B & N and they had all of the seasonal sets as well as the movies set, but I was rather surprised by the high price (about $60 apiece, not sure if the movie set was quite as high). I can get the same stuff off Amazon for a much more economic price (about $20 apiece, which seems far more sensible to me). Is this somewhat average for a lot of DVDs in a given series, or is it something more unique to B5 for some reason?

If you buy those DVDs JMS will hunt you down and explain that he doesn't make enough money off of those thanks to everyone screwing him but not to despair because he has big news that may or may not be Babylon 5 related that he will announce real soon just you wait!

I don't know why anyone would shop for DVDs and Barnes and Noble. They're always way overpriced.

I got all my B5 seasons at Best Buy for $20 a piece.

* shrugs * I've never really been in the B & N media section for some reason, but with the exception of the B5 series I didn't see anything that looked especially overpriced. I tend to more often buy single movies anyway, but I do have some series on DVD.

I got mine for a crazy low price at the WBstore.com, some may recall it took me 3 tries to get a season 5 set that didn't arrive broken.
I think I paid either $12 or $13 per season set.

Still haven't watched them yet but I will.
Watching McGyver right now.

Barnes and Noble DVDs have always been overpriced. B5 is no exception.

No shit. I was in B&N just yesterday, and while they don't have a media section at this one, they did have The Artist in both formats. The DVD alone was thirty dollars. I paid sixteen at Best Buy the day it came out.

As for B5, Best Buy puts these things on sale at least three times a year for 20.00 a season. That's how I got mine.

It does make you wonder, who buys those things? Are brick-and-mortar paper book people so out of touch they wouldn't price check?

Don't get me started on video and PC cables...

Back before the whole world of shopping was readily available via the internet, B&N was a good source for more obscure/indie fare. But it was always pricey. Some stuff seemed to sell for more than full retail price.

These days you can get most anything from Amazon. B&N is only worth it a couple of times a year when they have pretty good sales on Criterion Collection titles (Buy 1 get 1 50% off or Buy 2 get one free).

DVDs are consistently overpriced, but sometimes you can find decent deals on clearance. That's rare though, since clearance for B&N is usually pretty much regular price everywhere else.

That said, you can often find good deals on CDs there. Can't say how many times I've been snagged by the new release of some unknown because it was on sale and available to try at B&N.

Yeah, I forgot that some B&N's do have pretty good selections on stuff like that. There's one further in town that has a shit ton of Indie films and Criterion Collections. One in Dallas had a better selection of Doctor Who titles than Frys and I did pick up a couple there. At the time I considered the extra money what I'd pay in shipping as well as a "convenience fee" since I didn't have to wait.

So yeah, I'll pick up this kind of stuff if I'm in the mood and don't feel like waiting. But that's pretty rare.

You must not have bough them when they were new. They were upwards of $100.00 like the Star Trek sets.

And yeah, NEVER buy DVD's at Barnes & Noble. Amazon is better deal all the way around.

We have a B&N on one aide of the shopping center near work, and a Target on the other side. A movie that B&N wants $34 for will be at Target for $19.95.

I just picked up Season 1 on sale at my local Hastings for $17.99 (+ tax), which is the cheapest I've ever seen any of them anywhere (my local Sams Club warehouse store occasionally has them in stock, but they're never cheaper than like $23 or $24 a piece). I get paid again this Tuesday and plan on going back to pick up the remaining DVDs, provided they're still in stock (I need to call the store and see if they can't put one of their remaining copies of Seasons 2 through 5 on hold for me).

Good for you! I got mine thru DeepDiscountDVD.com back before they dropped the "DVD" and the excellent prices. I can't remember what I paid, but I do remember it was a good deal for the time.
