Avengers Comics

Starbreaker

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Decided to start reading as many Avengers comics as I can get my hands on today. I don't think I've read anything other than one of the early X-Men comics where they face off against the Avengers for some reason.

Issue #1 Lee/Kirby
The Avengers: Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man, Iron-Man (Wasp just follows Ant-Man around.
The Villain: Loki (Thor's half-brother)

This is a pretty typical tale of the time. Loki is after Thor's attention, so he tricks the Hulk into destroying some train tracks so Thor will come find Hulk. The others, including millionaire :lol::lol: Tony Stark are not intended to be drawn out into the open. Thor manages to defeat Loki and everyone decides to team up and become the Avengers... in literally about two frames. No objections at all - even from the Hulk.

Anyway, I liked it. Waiting for Captain America to show up...

Are the any particular outstanding issues or series involving the Avengers that I should look for?

-The Kreel/Skrull War
- Avengers: The Siege (pretty much a defining Avengers story and I'm not talking about the recent event)
-Hank Pym's breakdown

I'm sure others can reccomend more.

I loved Avengers Forever, which is a very late 90s story. It draws from many events in Avengers history, but isn't at all hard to follow without having read much. I knew the Avengers almost entirely from their appearances in the X-Men series during the Onslaught crossover, but terrifically enjoyed the story nonetheless.

I just read the Kree Skrull War and I was pretty disappointed with it. That's about the only Avengers story I've really read from before the Heroes Return Buseik / Perez relaunch.

Avengers Forever was great, as was Kree-Skrull War. I'd also recommend Englehart's run from the 70s; there's a TPB collection of the Serpent Crown Saga. Jim Shooter's run in the later 70s was also mostly very good, but suffered from an art meltdown in its final days.

I think Marvel has released most of the Avengers early issues in their Essentials line. The comics are black and white reprints but one collection may contain 20 or so issues. (it varies)

I have read (if I remember right) Essential Avengers volumes 1 thru 3.

I have mostly been unimpressed with it all except for the landmark issues. Especially the constant sniping between the team. I know that Stan brought that into the comics world and I can quite tolerate the angst and sniping in Spider-Man. The Hawkeye - Cap America sniping made it very tiring to read.

My favorite run is also the Busiek/Perez era at the turn of the century. The Korvac saga(#168-177) is a good read too. In fact everything around that times is good from the resurrection of Wonder Man to Hank's snapping.

Whenever I see the word "dark" these days, I immediately begin to nod off. :rommie:

Does Marvel still sell the "40 years of..." DVDs? I got the Avengers and Spidey ones a few years ago. It's every issue up to the release in PDF format. It's... awesome.

I never even heard of a CBR format till this moment, but I have no problem with PDFs.
