AUGUST CHALLENGE; TWO COINS

Star Trek
Two Coins

(part of the STAR TREK GRAYSON/RUNNER universe)

It happened in a flash.

Jeffery Joneson was your average 14 year old boy. He was born in Anderson California into a modest family. His father was a traveling salesman, and his mother worked at the local grocery store as a teller. Life had been good to Jeffery; until now.

What had happened to Jeffery was a tragic accident. While riding his bike home from school Jeffery was struck by drunken driver. The force of the collision threw Jeffery to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the unforgiving pavement of the sidewalk. The driver of the car, a sixteen year old girl, didn’t even have a license. She had been recklessly joy riding in her parent’s car. But as fate would have it the sixteen-year old girl was not only driving the car that had hit Jeffery, she was also his sister.

The doctors treated Jeffery as best as they could. But the damage to his spine, as well as his lower head, was severe enough that they could not save him. Due to the extent of the crash Jeffery would not feel any pain in his final hours of life. Although he was obviously tired from the ordeal, he was still awake.

His parents, Beth and Larry, were unable to tell their son that he was going to die on this day. They wanted him to live out his hours at peace. Their daughter, Rebecca, had just been brought to the hospital by a police officer who would allow her to be with the family at this very stressful time. And while on the service they wanted to blame their daughter for the terrible event that had happened, they realized they had to let her be apart of her brother’s death. Although she was behind the wheel, it was Beth who had left the keys out on the counter. And, to be sure, this had not been the first time Rebecca had taken the car in this matter. Lax parenting skills by both parents had played a large part in the terrible events of the day. In the days to come the two parents would come to see that they all had a measure of blame to share; but those days were still in the future. Today was a different matter. The healing had not yet started with them.

The police officer left Rebecca with her parents and reminded them that an officer would be by their house the next day to take an official statement. There were legal matters that had to be taken care of, but could wait until the next day or so.

Rebecca could feel the cold stares of her parents on her. Although they did share the blame, the two parents could not, at this point, separate their feelings of loss and anger.

“Why?” Larry asked his daughter.

Rebecca was devastated. All the while at the police station she knew she had killed her little brother. Her little brother had looked up to her since they were little kids as though she was a hero. They had their share of fights, what siblings don’t? But she also defended her brother from kids who teased him while he was growing. Sure, she teased him, but she was his older sister; it was her job.

Rebecca walked over to her mother for comfort, but Beth did not open her arms, and simply turned away to face the window that looked in on Jeffery, as he was tended to by the doctor and nurse.

It was clear to Rebecca that while her parents were not outwardly angry with her, they still harbored anger inside; and why not?

The doctor came out to speak with the family.

“How is our son?” Larry asked the doctor.

“You’re son has amazed us with his strength.” The doctor told them. “But I don’t think he will make it through the hour. I’m sorry.”

Beth buried her head into Larry’s shoulder as the doctor walked off. She then looked over to Rebecca.

“How could you!” Beth suddenly yelled at Rebecca. “You killed your brother!!” Beth continued. “I hope you rot in hell!”

“Honey, calm down,” Larry said, “we need to spend this time with Jeffery.” Larry comforted his wife, but also looked at Rebecca with eyes, that had they been able too, would have squeezed the life out of her.

The two grieving parents left the waiting room and entered the room of their son, who was dieing before their eyes. Rebecca was not asked to join them.

Rebecca collapsed to the floor and cried with out control. Suddenly there was a flash and Q, clad with a doctor’s gown, was sitting next to her on the floor. While surveying this ‘other universe’, he had witnessed this scene play out and had decided to intervene.

It was quite strange, Q thought to himself. His universe, the so called “Star Trek” universe, had been the creation of man named Gene Roddenberry. Most of the events that had happened in the “star trek” universe was the result of fictional writing that had manifested into reality in the “Star Trek” universe.

But now that the Q were in the possession of the medium that had allowed the creation of a fictional universe, an alien object called the Server, the Q now had access to this other plane of reality.

Rebecca, who had buried her head in her hands, looked up at the sound of the flash.

“Ummm,” Rebecca said to Q, “can I help you?”

Q, who had surprising been moved by the drama, of the situation, cradled the young girl in his arms as best as a God could do.

“Its okay,” Q said to her as he ran his hand through her tangled hair. “Let it all out.” He searched his memory for other Picard inspired words of wisdom. “Your parents won’t blame you forever.”

She lifted her head up and looked up at Q. “How do you know about that?”

Q had to search for an answer. “Oh,” Q told her, “I over heard the police officers when they left.”

“I bet you hate me too then. I’m his sister, I don’t even have a license, and I hit my own brother with the car, add to that I was drunk. Go ahead,” she pleaded with him, “hate me!”

Q was about to give her a dose of reality but something held him back. Perhaps it was all that syrupy time with Picard and then Janeway. He actually felt compassion for someone as at fault as Rebecca was. He could, with a snap of his fingers, take the girl back into time and have her relive the moment thus changing the flow of history. He had done it before, he could do it again. But if Picard were here he’d warn Q about changing the events of the past. That it shouldn’t be done. The universe should be left alone to evolve the way it should.

“Blast Picard.” Q said softly.

“Huh?” Rebecca asked. She then started to stand up. Q helped her. She looked into the window and saw her mom and dad sitting next to Jeffery as his life was ebbing away.

“If only I could change places with him.” Rebecca said to Q and herself. “I should be in that bad dieing, not him.”

Q smiled to himself. It was the perfect answer. He snapped his fingers..

Rebecca opened her eyes and everything had changed. Her father, mother and brother were sitting next to her on a bed. Somehow, someway, she had changed places with Jeffery. She was now the patient. She could feel a bandage on her head, and could see the various lines of blood coming in and out of her body.

“What happened?” She asked her mom who sat closest to her.

“You took the car out again,” Beth said with tears. “You’re hurt real bad honey. The doctors don’t think you’re going to make it.” Beth said as she was overcome with crying.

Rebecca looked over to Jeffery who was also sad as he looked at his dieing sister. “Don’t be sad little shit.” Rebecca said with a smile. That had always been her nickname for her brother. “Now you get to have the TV room to yourself.”

The others laughed softly. Even though she was dieing, Rebecca still had her sense of humor. One by one they shared memories with each other about Rebecca. An hour later the doctors came into the room after she had passed. The family was escorted out of the room after a half hour of just being with their dead daughter and sister.

Rebecca’s spirit watched it all transpire from the waiting room. Q stood beside her as she did. They watched as her parents and brother walked together down the long hallway. Content that they had said goodbye to Rebecca.

“You did this didn’t you?” Rebecca asked Q, all the while watching her family.

“Yes. I did what you asked, I switched your places.” Q told her.

“Oh,” Q said to her, “I don’t know. I have been told by others not to get involved but, well, I guess being human all this time has given me a kidney.” Q said.

“You mean a heart.” Rebecca corrected him.

“Oh yeah,” Q said with a smile, “that one.”

“What happens to me now?” Rebecca asked.

Q thought for a moment as the room they stood in was replaced by stars. “I don’t know. I have never saved the soul of person from another reality.”

“Hey wait a minute,” Rebecca said to Q. “I know you! You’re from that show Battlestar Galactica!!!”

Q had no idea what that was but he corrected her. “No my dear, I’m afraid the universe I am from does not have such an interesting title. My universe is called Star Trek. Blah,” Q said, “talk about lifelessness.”

“Oh, you mean Captain Kirk and Spock and all that? Are you from that ship in space? Isn’t it like the real Enterprise or something like that?”

Q nodded. “I guess so.” Q said to her. “And as to where I am taking you?” Q said to her. “How do you feel about the Delta Quadrant?”

“The what?” Rebecca asked with a totally confused look.

“Oh,” Q said with a slight laugh, “you’ll fit right in!”

And with that the field of space they traveled through exploded with even more stars…

Rebecca Jones will next be seen in “STAR TREK VOYAGER; THE OTHER PATH”

CONTINUED...soon

An interesting twist on the challenge. Q certainly had been known to show up in unexpected places and do unexpected things, so - why not?

Why not, indeed? It was an interesting and thoughtful take on the topic. Good job, RS.
