This video (well, audio) of Gene Roddenberry from a speaking engagement in 1982 includes what was probably the first public announcement of plans for Star Trek III. So what you hear might be called the earliest audience reaction to (the as-yet-unmade) TSFS.

This is hardly unusual in the entertainment business. Do you think all those 'creative differences', 'musical differences' 'mutual consent' explanations for various splits in casts or band line-ups are all true?

This was interesting to hear. It only goes to prove that politics and public relations play a very important role in the entertainment industry. But, everyone, IMO, knew that anyway.
