I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but my best efforts with the search engine turned up nothing.
The ABC's Radio National Book Show, on 7 May this year, featured a segment discussing Trek fiction. James Swallow is interviewed, discussing Day of Vipers.
The presenter has done a bit of research on it, and there's some comments of interest from another (non-Trek) author and a book store owner. They mostly cover reasons why people want to read and write Trek novels, but also the difficulties involved in writing tie-in books, and their artistic merits.
The audio can be listened to or downloaded from http://www.abc.net.au/rn/bookshow/stories/2009/2563271.htm
The Trek discussion begins about halfway in.
