Audio issue with my Mac and Final Cut Express

So I'm editing a short movie with final cut express. I've got music and sound effects added, but sometimes when I play my movie in Final Cut there's the loud crackling sound and then all my audio (seriously everything in and out of final cut) just goes silent. Any ideas on what's causing this?

What exact/specific Mac and Mac OS X and FCE version do you use?

What are your clip settings and sequence settings? You can find out via the Column Browser.
