Atlantis sunk, Musketeers fight another day

Not surprised about Atlantis. It was just Hercules: The Legendary Journeys stuck in one city...

Atlantis was cancelled weeks ago, not sure when they plan to burn off remaining episodes (which the lead actor say end on a cliffhanger). The bit that always baffled me about the show was making the lead character from the present and then doing nothing with it.

What's miraculous about The Musketeers surviving? Sure, losing Peter Capaldi was a blow, but it seems to be holding together okay. At least, it's kept me watching.

As for Atlantis, I haven't really missed it. It's gotten a little better in the second season, but it's tried so hard to distance itself from its first-season goofiness that it's become too action-driven and grim at the expense of the characterization and the charm it occasionally managed to muster.

Yeah, that was bizarre. Occasionally he showed a familiarity with Greek myths, like recognizing the name Medusa; but he was caught totally off guard by Circe, and didn't seem to recognize the name Medea even though his name is Jason. This season, they seem to be ignoring Jason's present-day origin completely.

The bigger thing that baffled me was why they called it Atlantis at all. It isn't about Atlantis, it's about Minoan Crete, except on the mainland instead of an island. Sure, some think that Minoan Crete inspired the Atlantis myth, but there's nothing about this show that really justifies calling it Atlantis when it's basically just a general Greek mythology series. Okay, we got a glimmer of prophecy about the fall of Atlantis in the season premiere, but that was no doubt a long-term plan that's never going to come to fruition now.

I'm really glad the Musketeers has another series. I did get a bit worried when it was shifted to Friday nights, and after the gaps between episodes caused by sporting events.

I'm still amazed Atlantis got a 2nd season!

It's still on Saturdays on BBC America. It seems to have replaced Atlantis, which had in turn replaced Doctor Who, IIRC.

Ah. In the UK the first series was in Sunday evenings but the second's on Fridays which was worrying

I tried so hard to like Atlantis, but just couldn't get into it, like I could with Merlin. I'm about five eps into The Musketeers, and love it, though.

Yeah, Atlantis was borderline interesting at best. The main reason for watching is Mark Addy, who's an incredibly good actor even with mediocre material. It's also nice to see Juliet Stevenson (the Oracle) again. I saw her back in the '80s as Antigone in a TV production of the Oedipus cycle, and she was fantastic there. (Good grief, almost 30 years ago now. How did that happen?)
