At long last... Dark Skies on DVD

After many years of waiting, the short-lived series Dark Skies (or darkskies even) is coming to DVD -- but only announced for Region 2 so far.

I assume that the usual problems with music rights are causing the delay for Region 1. I watched the series a couple of years back on ITV4 and thought, while the story had its problems, it would have been interesting to see how they would have attempted to retrofit history in the late 60s, 70s, and 80s to incorporate the fight against the Hive. I think their mytharc would probably have come out making a lot more sense than the X-Files' mytharc did. Of course, had Dark Skies continued, who would have stepped into 7 of 9's leotard in Voyager?

Anyone else been waiting for this release?

Great news indeed:bolian::)
Been waiting this to appear on DVD for long time..definetly goes to my DVD shopping list:cool:

I doubt it -- even if they have film stock to digitise, it's unlikely that the CGI effects would be recreated in HD given the limited audience for this. It'd be a mashup at best like Bablyon 5, and probably not even 16:9.

Admittedly, it's been a long time since I watched the show, but I don't recall it being very heavy on CGI effects.

Yeah, the greys were dodgy animatronics and not as good as the ones on Stargate SG1. I think the CGI was mostly UFO shots (could have been models perhaps), Bach's levitating communication device that unfolded from the container he wore on a chain round his neck, and Kimberly Sayers getting covered in goo when she was abducted. Maybe there were a few others -- don't recall.

I'm a X-Files fan and ufologist and i've long been intrigued by this show although I've never actually had a chance to see any of the episodes. From what I've heard, it's a good show so I'm definitely going to pick up DVDs when they come out. I'm just curious as to whether or not the storyline was brought to a conclusion before the show was cancelled.

I enjoyed it at the time of original airing, though can barely remember details now, and so am tempted to get the DVDs. I seem to remember the series falling apart after a season (?halfway through the first season) with some sort of shift in focus away from the original cast?

Anyway, I enjoyed what GMC calls in the OP "retrofitting history". That was the most fun aspect of the show I thought.

Can't say I noticed a shift in focus away from Eric CLose and Megan Ward's characters. They did add Jeri (Lynn) Ryan to the cast late on, but I think she strengthened the story, which had become a little repetitive in its John and Kim on the run motif. The late J T Walsh always shone in every scene that he was in. The last episode was a bit off -- perhaps because they tried to avoid a cliffhanger ending knowing that the series was cancelled.

Seems there will be some extras also:

Region 1 release rumored

A few readers have written in to tell us that Dark Skies will be released in Region 2, and they're planning on importing the set. There's no need, as we have a very reliable rumor that Dark Skies will see a Region 1 release very soon. Fans of the sci-fi series may recall a lot of music was used in the series, which was set in the 60s, and resulted in the cancellation of a previous attempt to release the show. The good news, from our trusted source, is that ALL the music has been cleared by Sony (Sony is not the company releasing it, they owned the rights to the series). Our source didn't have a date for the set, but if Sony has already licensed it out, we'd expect it sometime within the next year.

I loved that show. It was a shame NBC dumped in on Saturday nights and effectively killed it right from the start. I really hope their source is as reliable as they say.

It was fun and would have been fun to see how well they aged the characters through a long running show. The 13 episodes dealt with 6 years the show was going until 2000 when the aliens come in force or something. So the characters would be 65-70 by that time. They probably would have said the main characters had alien genes or whatever, but still really wish they could have went on longer.

I haven't seen it for 10 years or so since it was first on, but I remember it had some pretty good episodes.

It's great its finally getting released, but still, if I wanted a DVD release of a one-season wonder show starring Eric Close, I'd much rather have Now & Again.
Loved that show.

Nice this is one series I've wanted to watch the rest of at some point. One question tho was its ending on a clffhanger or more open ended type?
