Man... and you guys call yourselves Trek fans...lol :)

Way back in the late 80's there was a book called TNG Technical Manual... in that book, in the last chapter, there was some forward thinking involved fr the next "big thing" designated "Nova-Class" (this was obviously way before Voyager or the Nova-class, USS Equinox that made her debut there). Four possible design space-frames were presented to the reader in the form of dorsal views, with accompanying documentation to explain each design. This was such a design (the 4th). Here is the original line drawing from the book that was produced by the indomitable Rick Sternbach:

You can see the other types here:

I knew were the design came from - I was responding to Triumphant's post about the Last Starfighter.

I still have that old book in my library...

With those pods at the rear it looks like more of a bulk freighter (which would make having the engines up front a sensible approach). That would have been an interesting idea for a second lost Starfleet ship, one that was definitely ill-equipped for the journey.

Is it just me or do the nacelles look they're a little too far forward?

I always felt that she looked like Nell from Battle Beyond the Stars.
As for pods...I think the pods concept is awesome, especially if fleshed out to incorporate some nice elements.

I always thought it was cool that at least two of the features Rick used in those 'Nova' concepts turned up in Voyager - the delta hull and the variable geometry nacelles.

Y'know, you've done this one more justice than i would have thought possible. Well done. Would the aft section of your version mount the mission pods?

And please tell us you're going to take a stab at the others. I'd love to see what you come up with. :)

thank you :)
When I looked at this design, I did envision the aft mission pods as being optional...this drawing does retain the aft section design of the original drawing, just a tad refined. I have added the sketches below:

These roughs were to get a feel for the shape, and the pods and their docking connector.

And another Nova concept...this time the Type I

And I had explored the "Type II", as a possible Luna-Class study many moons ago:

I LOVE the Type 1 beyond words.

I especially like your choice to split the deflector with the forward part of the neck.

Thanks mate. I dunno if I'll get to fleshing the other types out some more, but those are my doodles...I still need to think about Type III

NP...I dunno when I'll get to do more with these, as I am working on other projects, but I hope sooner rather than later :)

I always thought of that as a TNG tug
