UPDATE, JUNE 4:
Keith Birdsong has passed after several days in a coma.

UPDATE, JUNE 2:
Artist Keith Birdsong is in grave condition following a stroke. From the post linked to below:

Marc B. Lee posted this message from Keith's mother:

“Keith has not passed away. We are preparing to have his organs donated..this is something we, his family believe he would want. The arrangements must be done before he passes from this life.

“Posts have been all over his page. To be clear about his condition, he is currently on life support and sadly the prognosis is not good. He had a stroke Thursday afternoon and the damage to his brain is extensive. The bleeding in his brain and internal injuries are far more than he will be able to recover from.

“Please understand we love Keith and could use prayers.”

ORIGINAL POST:
Just saw a Facebook post from Michael & Denise Okuda's page that Keith Birdsong, an artist who, among other things, painted the cover art for many Star Trek novels and books, has passed away. Their post:

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of noted artist Keith Birdsong. Star Trek fans know of his beautiful paintings that graced the covers of so many Star Trek novels. We are grateful that his talent graced the cover of the Star Trek Chronology. Keith suffered from serious health issues, but was able to return to painting long enough to make an appearance at the most recent Star Trek Las Vegas convention, where we were lucky enough to see him one last time. Ad astra, Keith.

I remember his name from the trading cards I collected as a kid, he did some very nice portraits. RIP.

A great talent. RIP. :(

ETA: Michael Okuda posted on Facebook moments ago that reports of Keith Birdsong's demise may have been greatly exaggerated. Updates as they're posted.

Damn. Sad to hear. He was a talented guy. I started a thread about him just a few months ago when I found some high-res versions of his original art online. You can still see those here to appreciate his talent. And the thread I started back in October is here.

I'm sorry to Hear that Keith Birdsong passe away. I really like his artwork alot. He was a very talented artist.

As much as I appreciate the books written by Trek authors over the years they would not be nearly as attractive without his artwork.
When the bookstores I used to frequent actually had a decent and substantial selection of star Trek novels I would spend a large portion of my time examining each cover in my hand, admiring the artwork and getting excited by it. I could have almost bought the books for the artwork alone and displayed them on the shelf. I'm sure I wasn't the only one to get goosebumps when discovering a new book.

A real talent. His work was a key part of my Star Trek reading experience. I remember the first time I saw the cover to Federation and the feeling of "OMG!" that came with it. (Never mind that Federation features a weird Patrick Stewart likeness.) He did good.

I get "unavailable due to legal reasons" here in England when I click that.

That's due to GDPR. Some American news sites block European visitors so they don't have to do any sort of GDPR compliance. A local paper in Tulsa may think the effort to comply with European laws isn't worth it. To be frank, I'm not sure they're wrong.

These are really beautiful -- I have an account, so I can see the full-size images, and they're eye-popping.
