Articles of the Federation fans.....

I just watched the first episode of the new fan-series Star Trek: Federation One (in limited release---wide release probably this weekend). As someone who has always wanted to see more storytelling like Articles of the Federation, I recommend giving it a look-see; it was pretty awesome seeing a Star Trek credit sequence that included credits for "Press Secretary" and "Chief of Staff". And the storytelling isn't half-bad either.

Although the episode does center on a situation set up by the Hidden Frontier/Intrepid crossover movie Operation Beta Shield, it's fairly disconnected from the rest of the HF-verse, so you don't need to know 7 years' worth of continuity to follow the plot or anything.

I know this is only marginally lit-related, but I think the AotF fans are the ones most likely to appreciate this, so I figured giving it a shout-out wouldn't hurt. :)

Hmm. The trailer was... Interesting.

I dunno. I can never really bring myself to watch these fan films without snickering uncontrollably. Space opera is really hard to get right, and if any part of the production is sub-part, especially the acting, the whole kit and kaboodle tends to descend into complete silliness and (un-self-aware) camp.

Personally I applaud the effort more than anything else. In the early days of Hidden Frontier, there were times when only one or two really decent actors were involved in an episode, and that could be tough to get through. Over the years many of the less capable actors have departed, though, and most of the replacements have been on the whole stronger. Plus the technical ability to get green-screening right has increased considerably.

If you give Beta Shield a look, I doubt you'll have all that much to complain about. (It's not flawless of course.)

Excellent! :D Really looking forward to watching it. I wasn't too sure of a politically themed series when I first saw the announcement of Federation One, but Operation Beta Shield set a new bar for fanfilms I thought, and changed my mind completely.

Like Lindley said, the effort that goes into these films is the standout part, everything else is a bonus, and these series are quite liberal with the bonuses (the acting is always improving, superb CGI, sets, props, makeup...) ;) </gush>

I hope it picks up in the vein of Articles, as I really enjoyed that book's fresh perspective on the Trekverse.
