Aronofsky joins HBO's Hobgoblin series

Sounds like this intriguing idea for a show might actually make it to the screen.

Darren Aronofsky...has also come on board an HBO drama series project, which has been in development at the pay cable network for the past several months. Titled Hobgoblin, the drama is being written by the husband-and-wife duo of Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman and sounds like Inglourious Basterds with magicians. It revolves around a group of con men and magicians using their skills of deception to help defeat Hitler during World War II.

I like it when any historical period, especially pre-1950, becomes the a basis for a TV series. We need more of those. This one in particular sounds like it could be a lot of fun and WWII certainly hasn't been over-exposed as a topic for TV series, particularly taking such an unusual (and almost certainly ahistorical) slant. Chabon's involvement already had me interested, and now I'm even moreso.

Interesting, I think the cable channels have been giving us a lot of these interesting historical(ish) settings and personally I like that. The networks look to be getting in the act with that Pan Am and Playboy show. Better than CSI/NCIS/Law and Order/etc for me at least.

Since it has magic doesn't it qualify as a fantasy show?

I loved The Yiddish Policeman's Union, but I'll admit that's the only Michael Chabon I've read. It's a fun book with some ingenious world building, which bodes well for any scultping of an alternate earth that Chabon is behind.

Darren Arnofsky I guardedly like, although I'm not a big fan. The Wrestler left me cold, Black Swan engaged me more, though... and as far as genre flicks go, The Fountain is memorably high concept if nothing else.

But yeah. Magicians fight Nazis, talented guys set to direct, write show. Sounds fun.

I think they mean real-world, magician-type magic, which is why I posted in this forum.

Supernatural magic wouldn't be as fun. For mere mortals to use magic tricks against Nazis sounds like a crazy-stupid kind of courage, and that would make for much better drama.

Sounds like this is based on Churchill's Wizards - an excellent book about the masters of deception in WW2
