Are you a Star Trek fan?

Are you a Star Trek fan?

It seems like a silly self-evident question, doesn't it?

Perhaps the question should be: what defines being a Star Trek fan?

Over the years I've been approached by people who said things along the lines of, "I understand you're a Star Trek fan?"

Me: "Yes. That's right."

Them: "Oh, cool. Did you watch the new Voyager last night?"

Me: "Uh, no."

Them: "Oh, too bad. You missed it?"

Me: "No, I knew it was on, but I was doing something else."

Them: "Really? I thought you're were an avid Star Trek fan?"

Me: "I am. I'am a fan of the orignal series called Star Trek. I've watched the others, but they just don't work for me. I've found them very hit-and-miss. So in the end I just do something else I'm more interested in."

Them: But, you're supposed to be a fan. How can you ignore the other shows?"

Me: "Well, do you watch all the CSi shows or all the Law & Order series?"

Them: "Nah, I only like one or two of them."

Me: "Well there you go. Does that make you any less of a CSi fan?"

Them: "Hmm. I guess not. I just never thought of it that way.

And so folks, how do you define being a Star Trek fan? Do you like everything or just parts of it? Does that make you any less of a devoted fan?

Thoughts?

Hello.. Warped9... good topic. it is intersting.. i do get annoyed how ALL the Trek shows get lumped together.. and compared.. and stuff..

when people say Star Trek they usually mean ALL the shows.. which is annoying..

i mean i watch DW but cant stand TW... tho those are quite different..

I'm a fan of TOS and a Trek fan in general. I have watched all the incarnations of Star Trek (including Enterprise). Not all of them were good, but not every episode of TOS was good either. And not every Trek movie was that great, but I went to see each one in the theater. I didn't always watch every episode when it was first on, but I eventually saw them all in reruns. I've even been to a convention. Back in 1975 in New York. Shatner, Nimoy, the whole crowd was there. I guess once a Star Trek fan always a Star Trek fan, for better or for worse. Here's hoping the new movie is better...

I like TOS, I like DS9. If you like one or more Star Trek series, you're a Star Trek fan.

It's the same as someone who either likes rock'n'roll, classic rock, '80s rock, or modern rock, you don't have to like all four to like rock.

Regardless, I'm almost in my 30s, I'm not going to waste time getting into arguments over whether or not I'm any less of a fan because I don't care what other people think when it comes to something as trivial as that. It's all just something to kill time when I have the opportunity.

You could say I was a bigger fan when I was younger. These days Star Trek falls into the category of "things I used to watch". I'm less devoted but that doesn't have to do with the number of series I like.

I grew up with Star Trek in the 70s and have enjoyed all the films and series since, to varying degrees.

I consider myself a Trekkist.

I love some of it, I like some of it, I'm disappointed by a tiny amount of it and flabbergasted at the shittiness of an even smaller amount of it.

In other words, it's mostly pretty good.

It's hard to nail down exact definitions of the following, but these seem to be the consensus -

Trekkie: A devoted fan of the television program Star Trek.

Trekker: What a devoted Star Trek fan who doesn't like the term "Trekkie" (because they think it's demeaning) calls themself.

Trekkist: Someone who likes the show, will watch it if it's on, but is not a devoted fan.

Personally I never understood those unnecessary differentiations. It's all just hollow words.

I agree. I guess that's why it's so hard to find definitive definitions.

Not quite.

Trekkist: Devoted Star Trek fan who thinks the Trekkie/Trekker debate is silly and beneath him and demeans us all.

I've never heard of 'Trekkist' as a third definition. As 'ist' is often a suffix for an ideology or a religion; I would have guessed it means someone who takes the franchise even more seriously than Trekkies; to the point it becomes a doctrine to abide by.

:rommie: Kegek, I love your felicitous responses. :p

Thanks. :) But I think this is what the thread boils down to anyway.

See, that's what I'm saying. I couldn't find that definition anywhere. I had never even heard of the term Trekkist until this thread popped up.

That is because, as far as I know, I was the one who coined the term Trekkist.
