With Starfleet no involved I see the need for money being important. I guess go with the classic Gold Pressed Latinum. Who better to help them out than Quark Captain Nog or Grand Nagus Rom. Jason

Internally there is no usable Federation currency.
If Picard wants alien currency, the Federaion will give it to him becuase they see no value to it, if they believe that his motives are pure.
