I am someone who has jumped around quite a bit. I find that I generally do not have a problem doing that. I will not jump in and out of a specific series or trilogy (Destiny comes to mind as well as Vanguard) and I tend to try and read them as a set. Otherwise I bounce around. Two threads of novels I have not ventured into yet are "The Fall" and "Typhon Pact". The big reason is that those contain several books and I do not want to start them until I know I can read all in the series.
One thing I will say is that when I bounce around I invariably run into a story line or point that is covered enough so I do not need to have read the source book/series but I find that I want too! Author annotations are great for finding these little gems.
