Are gold shirts extra fragile?

ClawsThatCatch

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I have a suspicion that the gold shirts on Star Trek were made of inferior quality by the 23rd century equivalent of Chinese factory workers. Because, Spock never tears his science blue shirt, ever. I'm sure of this. In fact, I can't think of any other character who has his shirt torn. Even the redshirts don't tear their shirts. It's just Kirk's gold ones. That's probably why he started wearing the green ones; he literally ran out of gold shirts. I bet Kirk kept meaning to send a complaint to Starfleet, but he kept getting distracted by his perfectly shaved chest until he forgot what he was going to complain about.

Spock's blue shirt gets ripped open by the lightning bolt in "The Apple." Excusable, since it IS a lightning bolt that does it.

I remember at the end of The Naked Time, McCoy wordlessly grabs Kirk's collar and rips the tunic open to give him a shot? Hilarious stuff, that.

Jim doesn't like wasting time in the sack.

Talk about gratuitous shirt-ripping!

In later episodes, the hypospray was apparently capable of delivering medications THROUGH clothing. In fact, at the end of "The Tholian Web," McCoy gives Kirk a shot of "triox compound" -- right through his spacesuit!

I mean, WTF good is a porous spacesuit?

Magic!

Ok, you're right. Spock's shirt was ripped in "The Apple" but it was in the back of the shirt and really--for a lightning strike--not a very serious rip. I mean, compare Spock's ripped shirt to one of Kirk's ripped shirts (and Kirk was just mud wrestling with a guy.)

Hilarious! IS Spock's shirt even ripped? Maybe just blackened! Unreal. Maybe Vulcans get proportionately stronger clothes since they're better at everything else, too.

People, people.. the gold shirts are not extra fragile. It's the sheer force of Kirk's charisma that comes busting through them in moments of high drama.

I wonder how many of the female crew would have slapped him for doing that to their uniforms... :p (apparently McCoy never heard the phrase "roll up your sleeve")

I guess that explains why they were trying to rescue Kirk as fast as possible. ;)

Actually, since the 23rd century engineers can manufacture tons of shiny baubles with no trouble at all, it stands to reason that Kirk's shirts are stitched with real gold thread - which, of course, is not really that strong...

Well, Kirk tends to get in more fistfights than Spock, so wouldn't his shirt rip more? ;)

It's just so people can see his chest.
