Approximate Air Dates for Season 5

So I am going to Italy for a good friends wedding in June 2010. Whilst I'm in that area I will be visiting Paris and you guessed it London. I was hoping that I would finally get to see Doctor Who when it actually airs and not a few hours later. ;)

So when does Doctor Who usually air? I know it usually starts in April or May. Is it likely to still be going in June?

Also are there any other Doctor Who related tourist places to see whilst there?

Cheers.

well, you have to catch the London Eye, of course...

it probably won't be on in June as the (sah-ker) world cup'll be on and it seems more likely than not that S5 will kick off in february to be over before the world cup.

So how long does it take to get to Cardiff from London? By now the whole city is pretty much a 'Doctor Who tourist place'. :)

By train? About two hours (but don't rely on that, as you're travelling by Worst Group Late Western, as its customers call it. The official version version is Frist Group Great Western). By car, probably about the same, depending on traffic jams on the M4 (old joke: DJ - "Traffic news now - bad news for drivers heading west on the M4... you're going to Wales.").

We won't know for certain until possibly as late as April. One of the annoying things (subject to me and other whining about incessantly) is the fact the BBC tends to confirm airdates only a few weeks (sometimes less) ahead of time. We can GUESS that it'll air starting in March or April but until the BBC comes out and says it we don't know. Speculation regarding when Sarah Jane Series 3 and Torchwood Children of Earth would air proved to have a zero-percent success rate.

Making things even more complicated is the recurring rumor that due to the World Cup the BBC may steal from BSG's playbook and split the season, giving us Season 5.0 in the spring and then 5.5 sometime later in the year. (The fact no one's mentioned a 2010 Christmas special has added weight to this, if the special ends up being rolled into 5.5). Worst case scenario has 5.5 not airing till 2011 but I am HOPING that is b.s. That would likely kill the franchise, as far as I'm concerned, especially in the (hopefully unlikely) event that Smith isn't an instant hit and they need time for him to build his popularity. The idea of splitting the season period is dangerous - frankly if they're going to be messed up by World Cup I'd rather they just held the thing until the summer or even the fall and showed it without interruption.

Again, though, we may not know for certain until virtually the 11th Hour, though I'd think Doctor Who Magazine might start giving some hints once RTD fully hands over the reigns to Moffat after the final specials air.

There's also the rumour that series 5 might start as early as February...
I think there's merit in such a schedule.

Doctor Who has been off-the-air for a year, and audiences are going to be jazzed with the specials closing out Tennant's era. The best thing for the BBC to do is to strike while the iron is hot. I could see Smith's first season beginning within a month of "The End of Time."

Wouldn't surprise me, and it would ensure it was well finished for the start of the World Cup.

The major downside is that if, as the rumours suggest, there isn't a Christmas Special next year, then it'll be a long year to S6 (especially if they choose to revert to a later start)

So why is there a Doctor light episode if there's no christmas special to film?

Given that Moffat has talked about the challenges of moving from writing a couple of scripts a year to producing 14 episodes a year he's clearly expecting to be doing an Xmas Special.

As for when Series 5/1/31/11.1 starts?

Because they didn't start shooting with the Xmas Special they could start a month earlier than normal, which would be late February.

On the other hand Richard Curtis has said on two different occasions now that his episode (which is possibly number six) will shoot in November and air in February which would mean mid-January.

Then again the first confirmed piece of 11th Doctor merchandise (one of the BBC's audio exclusive novels) is out on the 8th of April, which could suggest a traditional March start.

In short, no one has a bloody clue.

I think I was getting confused regarding the Christmas special. My understanding is that X-mas is always filmed after the next series but airs first? Assuming I'm correct this means that either they're going to film next years special this year, or else it'll be tacked on to the begining or end of S6 filming.

I could be getting my logic in a muddle though!

OK, here goes.

It was the first thing they shot for Series 2,3 & 4*, though with S4 they also shot "The Next Doctor" at the end of the schedule so Tennant could go into "Hamlet".

S5/1/31/11.1 didn't start with the shooting of a 2009 Xmas Special, since that'll be Tennant's second-last episode, which was obviously already done earlier in the year but should end with shooting the 2010 one.

*Which was why Xmas always seemed to suffer from unseasonal heatwaves.
