Apple's new operating system for Mac computers will go on sale this Friday, a bit earlier than expected, as the company looks to continue to expand its share of the PC market.
Apple's new Snow Leopard software will sell as an upgrade for NZ$59 in New Zealand, starting August 28. Apple had previously said it would ship in September.

Still not sure if I'll upgrade now. Leopard is working out really well, so I don't really have an urge to upgrade.

I wonder why Apple is going to charge NZ$59 for the upgrade, when here it's only US$29. Using current exchange rates, they should be charging about NZ$42.50. Additional shipping costs for the physical media, perhaps?

Looks like I'm becoming one of the slowly-dying-brick-by-brick Apple oldsters - I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard because I have a PowerPC G4, I guess it's just a matter of time......

I hope the 'box set' (Snow Leopard + iLife) will be available at the same time. I already have iLife but the new version with Snow Leopard will be 64-bit 'clean'.

Plus, the actual Snow Leopard itself from the box set, won't be the one that is being sold for $29 - that version requires an existing Leopard installation to upgrade from, IIRC. (Otherwise, how would it know that you even have Leopard at all?) I prefer to install from scratch, so I'll need the 'box set'.

I still keep my 2002 TiBook G4 available to the side of my desk. It's useful for Photoshop 5.5, anyway, until I get around to obtaining a copy of CS3 for myself. (My family already has one, but apparently that's not good enough these days. As if it weren't expensive enough already.)

It was my primary machine up until last year.

I'm excited about it. I'm rather interested in the OS taking full advantage of multiple cores.

I've been waiting for this. I possibly need to wait a little while longer as I'm not going to buy the OS on its own, but get a Mac with it preinstalled. Yes, I know that if I buy a Mac now I get Snow Leopard for free but I'd still have to go through the hassle of doing the upgrade myself.

Actually, if anything, upgrading on a Mac OS is incredibly easy! Compared to any, and I mean any version of Windows, it's a cakewalk.

^I know, I've done it before with my old Mac Mini (similar situation, it came with Panther but I got Tiger for free) and with my existing MacBook Pro (Tiger to Leopard).

I just figure why go through the extra effort ? I'm in no rush. It'll be a matter of a week or so.

Yeah, it's £25 ($40) here as well. Previously you could get an education discount on OSX so I'll see if I can drop the price by ordering on campus.

True. Hey, I was just astounded the first time I installed Mac OS X. It finished so fast I sat there waiting 20 minutes for the next loading screen to start like WinXP and Vista does.

I've got 10.5, and am happy with it. What does 10.6 offer over it at this point to make it worth the investment, other than being shiny and made by Apple?

I got an email from ClubMac about this earlier today, I just don't know what the features are all about.

I'm perfectly happy running OS X 10.5 on my MacBook Pro. Upgrading to Snow Leopard isn't a huge concern of mine. However, at only $30, it's a very economical and affordable price. Eventually I'm sure I'll take the plunge.

This has been a long standing sore point in Australia as well. The prices paid for Apple stuff really didn't equated to what it should be with exchange rate and shipping allowances.

However it's not just Apple that does it though.

Yeah, I have seen such differences across the board in consumer products imported.

I'll probably upgrade sometime next week. I'll be buying the family pack, as it's cheaper to get that to upgrade my two machines (iMac and Macbook).

Or I might wait for a bit and see if there are any horror stories. I'm so indecisive. :)

That's the difference this time around. Apple's gone under the hood and has made 300+ performance enhancements, reduced the size of the OS by 4 GB and given it much more versatility and flexibility. Just a shiny OS wouldn't make me excited, but this one's all about the mechanics, and they touched very little on the look of the OS itself.
