Anyone still play BOTF?

GeneHunt

I dug out my old BOTF disc the other day and thoroughly enjoyed playing it even though it is nearly 10 years old. Does anyone else still play it? if so does anyone fancy a multiplayer internet game?

I play it occasionally when I'm really at a loose end. But I've never been good at at, and when the Borg come, it all goes horribly wrong.

YES! That or the damn Crystalline Entity :p

It's worth starting a war with every other empire just so I can rest assured that I was the one responsible for killing every citizen in the empire.

I like my subjects to acknowledge I take an active part in their lives :alienblush:

As for online play, as much as I'd love to, I'm one of the few people left in this part of the universe who doesn't have an internet connection at home :(

I've always assumed BOTF can only be won if you can keep peace with everyone (impossible since the Ferengi and the Klingons are so aggressive), build up a good amount of trade routes to keep your credits total high, and then use those credits to build a huge fleet so when the Borg turn up, you have a small chance of not being wiped out.

Even if you confronted a Borg cube with a fleet of 50 Sovereign class ships, would it be enough to defeat the cube, since in Star Trek lore, no fleet has ever destroyed a Borg ship?

Well OK, the fleet did in First Contact, but only because Picard had inside knowledge from having been assimilated.

That's a good point actually... And the cube in BOBW was destroyed through clever computer shenanigans.

I think I did once beat a cube, but there was so little left after the battle, that Calamari cloud thing came in and just obliterated everything

I only ever won the game once, as the Romulans I think. The best idea seemed to be stay cloaked and just do a lot of raiding and hit 'n' run attacks. The Klingons seem to get themselves into too much trouble, the Ferengi tend to get the snot beaten out of them, but put up a good fight (I always feel a bit sad when the Alliance falls), the Cardassians seem to annoy just enough people to sign their own death warrant, and the Feds are too obsessed with diplomacy and keeping people happy, at the cost of their own lives... Silly Feds.

At least the game is true to life in that the universe is completely unfair and will throw an überpowerful sentient cloud at you when you least expect it :p

I've recently rediscovered my BOTF game and upgraded it with the Dominion Battle Mod, which has made it like an entirely new game.

I've never had much fun as any of the other races, but the Feds can kick some major ass, and I'm not sure why you guys find the Borg so hard to beat, you'd only need about 20 Sovereigns to do the job - I use Akiras though, gotta love the Dominion mod! :D

I've had games like that, but on one occasion, a borg cube turned up with only a single Defiant in the area. I figured it (and the planet) was doomed and was quite shocked when the Cube was the one destroyed:wtf:

Stock BOTF is ok, but do upgrade the game to the Dominion Mod III.

It's much better in terms of development, technology, balance and whatnot.

20 Sovereigns to destroy a Borg cube?

Even on stock BOTF that wasn't needed.
I think a stock BOTF required about 30 to 50 Excelsior class ships to take out a cube successfully.

Dominion Mod III is better.
You can construct 30 to 40 scout ships (type 2) and have them confront the Borg via ramming.
:D
Success in eliminating a cube.

And in the mod you only need about 30 to 40 constitution class ships to take out a Borg ship if it appears.

The only problem lies when the Borg show up way too soon and you don't even have so much as 9 ships :D

You know, I could never get that game to work on my old PC, I ended up returning it to the store. Is it worth playing?

Definitely, if your lucky enough to find a copy these days.

The link provided by 'ialfan' has the Joker's patch for XP (I think there's also one for Vista).

I think most (if not everything) you need is on that site to make the game work.

Oh, Jebus. I reinstalled BOTF today and installed the Ultimate Dominion Mod for the first time ever, spent at least 4 hours straight playing it.

Now I remember how much I suck at this game. So fun though when I turn my stuff up to 5 and the others to 1 or 2... I'll try to work my way up after I learn the new additions with this Mod.

Thanks for inspiring me, guys!

But, boo on you for making me put off stuff to do.

You can destroy a Borg cube with a fleet of around 12 Sovereigns - or 8 (IIRC) Defiants. Sadly, it takes ages to develop the technology to build these super duper ships! Its also a shame the AI is so pants when you play another race that the Feds never develop Sovs/Defiants. :(

I do like it - especially when I've got notheing much on (sadly not so lucky to have loads of time to play games these days. Damn working!)

Exactly what I did back in the day. (Edit: Forgot to mention I cheated quite a bit, as well. Shame on me!) God, I suck at strategy games

Gonna try out that Dominion Mod, sounds promising :techman:

It's like a mid-step between Master of Orion 1 and Master of Orion 2 with a Next Generation feel slapped all over it. It's worth playing, if you can get it at a decent price on Ebay. Sadly, though, collectors are pushing the price of the game WAY up, well beyond what it's really worth (I've seen it go well over $100 US at times).

Don't expect pure awesome-sauce, and you'll probably enjoy it if you like other 4x turn-based games.

Just finished a four hours+ BOTF-athon... great job getting me back into this game guys :p ;)

BOTF was about the only game I regularly cheated on, the game was so sloooowwww without it, I just got bored. With the cheats, it was a lot of fun.
