Since the Bad Robot film license expired last month, would anyone be open to TOS films set between TMP and TWOK? Recast with an older cast for the original characters. Use the same TMP ship. Maybe slightly updated the sets.

I've always thought Bruce Campbell would make an excellent Admiral James T. Kirk.

If it were me, I'd do what DC comics did after WoK and carry on the TOSish adventures of the Enterprise with Saavik and no Spock, and a heartbroken Admiral K. But they won't do anything like that because they're obsessed with their own weird idea of Trek continuity.

    No!

Just create new characters if the original actors are not available.

They tried that with Men in Black this year. It bombed. Most people who've heard of Star Trek, have heard of Kirk and Spock. The only other characters close are from Next Gen. They're still alive. And Stewart is already doing his new series.

The entire franchise before Kelvin films was based on creating new characters. If they would have just kept redoing TOS with new actors like some people seem to want we wouldn't have Picard, we wouldn't have any of the characters from the spin-offs.

I'd rather have movies and shows that focus on the time period between the end of TUC and the start of TNG. There's like a 70 year span of time that we know almost nothing about.

Who would the characters be? The TOS crew retires after TUC. And We know what happens to Kirk an Scotty that would take them out of the picture until TNG.

True. But all the new characters created after TOS were built up in TV series. And I don't see Discovery gaining enough popularity to risk a big budget film. And I'm certain Enterprise, DS9 and Voyager wouldn't either. I suppose you could try an Avengers style film combining the 3 TNG era series. But many of those actors are looking older than the the TOS folks did in TUC.

A shocking idea: new characters! (And yes, that period would be interesting.)

I think what they're doing with Picard is a really good idea. Bring couple of known and loved characters with their original actors and then bunch of new people.

Also, with a big budget film you can go with big stars instead of known characters. Daniel Craig or Cate Blanchett as a captain of Enterprise B or F or something like that.

It may work out well. But I'm talking about films, not TV. We could wait until Picard series finishes and try a film. But with it behind a paywall, I don't think it will garner enough fans to gain enough interest in a film.

Does being retired preclude not being able to have stories about them? Picard retired, and look at him now.

As for Kirk and Scotty, well, it is what it is.

Among the 18 or 19 concepts for a new Star Trek TV show or movie I'd like to see, this has ALWAYS been among the top of the list - exploring that time gap between TMP and TWOK. Yes, I'm very open to seeing new actors playing those part. I don't think you have to get actors that much older at all. While they didn't do anything to de-age the actors in TMP, the movie itself was only set a little over three years after the 5-year mission ended, so about 5 years after season 3 (give or take...) But I've always thought the gap between TMP and TWOK was a great place to tell new Prime timeline Kirk and Spock stories. They would have the benefit of the experience of a 5-year mission behind them, but not quite as 'seasoned' as they are in the movies - a good mix of youth and experience.

The TOS Movies are squarely "my" Trekkie Territory. This is where I became a fan. I lived and breathed those first six movies. The Refit Enterprise, IMO, is the Definitive Version of The Enterprise (with all due respect to the original and the D). While neither here nor there, I love that Discovery took more after the look of the movies.

... that having been said, if we're talking about non-reboot films taking place in-between TMP and TWOK, I'd want to have that '70s/'80s feel and I'd want actors who can make me forget they're not the original actors or I'll constantly be mentally drawing comparisons, intentionally or not. It's the same situation as with Spock. Zachary Quinto played a rebooted Spock. I didn't care much if he didn't feel like Spock to me (not that he didn't, he felt enough like Spock, but it didn't matter as much to me, if that makes sense). With Ethan Peck, I put his performance up to more scrutiny because he was supposed to be playing a younger version of "my" Spock.

So, ultimately, I have to say I'd prefer a CBSAA Series, with a different crew, set during the TMP-TWOK Era. Maybe run-ins with Admiral Kirk and the Enterprise crew but not with them as the main focus.

This is when Discovery should have taken place. They would have been able to reference anything from Original Series and Movie timeline without worrying about screwing with canon. The Spore Drive experiment could have been an offshoot of the failed TransWarp Drive. They would have had access to the Romulans and could have shown the introduction of any species that had already been known by TNG time, ie Bajorans, Cardassian etc. Even a George Takei / Excelsior cameo.

No, but it could work well as an animated series.

How about Star Trek: Harriman

Of course, Harriman would be an admiral by this point, with possibly Captain Demora Sulu in command of the Enterprise-B. We could also have recurring characters, such as Chekov, Captain Sulu, Uhura, etc. Maybe Malcolm McDowell could pop in every now and then as Dr. Tolian Soran, up to some nutty new scheme to try to get back into the Nexus :)

I am open to anything that is good. If they have a good story to tell and the talent to tell it, great. Recasting is already a reality I think we'd be best served to open our minds to that possibility. Creating new characters is cool too. As long as it's not boring and they are shooting for greatness, bring it on!

I go for it, if they don't reboot the original episode. Instead they should created new stories using new actors and actresses playing the same characiters.
