ANyone know if they still use Commodore as a rank in the JJverse.

Hartzilla2007

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I was just curious if they are going with the Commodore rank in the Trek XIverse or are they going with the Rear Admiral Unpper Half and Lower Half thing?

Since Pike went from Captain to Admiral, I would have to think that Commodore is sitting it out this time around.

I don't see any reason for it to not still be around. I don't think they are going to completely rethink Starfleet and rankings that much.

I would agree that based on the fact that Pike is an Admiral at the end, Starfleet likely dosen't use the Commodore rank.

Hell, even Enterprise was inconsistent about it. Yeah, we had Commodore Forrest in First Flight, but Captain Gardner was promoted to Admiral, and in TATV it's mentioned that Archer was offered a promotion to Admiral.

I just think that it is a rank that has fallen pretty much into disuse since the original show and although a writer may include that rank in a future movie I think the chances of it are slim. But then again I could be wrong!

Could it be that Commodore was more of a non-flight status military rank? Captain was the highest combat-ready rank for those in command of a single starship and Commedore was the highest non-ship command rank before becoming an Admiral?

Dunno.. Just spitballing here...

But removing Commodore doesn't help with that jump much. After all, Pike jumped from Captain to three-stripe Admiral, obviously skipping both two-stripe and one-stripe in the process...

That is, assuming that the barely double-width braid among Pike's four is equal to the more than triple-width flag braid seen in TOS, ENT and TMP.

It might instead be that Pike's braid is not three-braid Admiral at all, but instead some sort of four-braid Fleet Captain or whatever. The other flag officers cunningly don't wear any sort of braid for comparison...

If Pike is a Fleet Captain or whatnot, then all the bets are off for Commodore, of course.

Commodore might simply be considered a rank whose wearer is addressed as Admiral. It isn't likely that either Gardner or Archer would have been promoted directly to three-stripe (or "full") Admiral rank, after all - so the designation "Admiral" is shorthand for some other rank. It may be Rear Admiral, it may be something fictional standing in for Commodore at the time (say, Flotilla Admiral), or it may be Commodore.

No, in most Navies, Commodore was/is the rank of a single star flag officer. It's the Navy equivelant of Brigadier General. The same applied to Starfleet of TOS, in fact we saw two Commodores commanding starships (Decker and Wesley).

Well there is precedent. Janeway seemed to jump from Captain to Vice Admiral too.

Hey, that's not so bad compared to Kirk jumping from Cadet to Captain.

They call him Admiral Pike in the movie...

By Starfleet Order two-eight four five five, you are hereby directed to report to Admiral Pike, USS Enterprise, for duty as his relief.

Unless someone here was involved with the production, knows someone who was or has seen the script for the next film I don't know how they would know.

Which could simply mean that Commodore is accepted as a full flag rank and somebody holding that rank is addressed as Admiral, just like a Rear Admiral or a Vice Admiral would be addressed.

It might be something specific to STXI and the TNG era, where the first step after Captain is systematically referred to as Admiral. Or then it's optional, and in ENT both forms of address are allowed (and indeed heard). Both would be allowed in TOS, too, but we happen not to hear the Admiral version.

Really stretching it there...

I can't believe they'd be calling him 'Admiral' if the intent was for him to be some other rank. YMMV.

Actually it was Lieutenant to Captain.

He was promoted to first officer by Pike, which even Kirk and Spock thought was bizarre. Pike had a big boner for Kirk.

There you have it ladies and gentlemen... Star Trek's first gay character!

Honestly, this would have made so much more sense if they would have had Kirk as someone who had been drummed out of Starfleet.

Much of the film would've made more sense then... YMMV.

The canonistas would have been screaming for blood even more if that had happened.

Hasn't JJ raped your childhood enough?
