Anyone know anything about wifi?

I've just bought a new 802.11n modem/router because the previous cheap crappy one wasn't very good at all (weak signal, disconnects etc)

My PC has wireless connectivity because of a Dell Truemobile USB dongle that is probably about 5-6 years old. Although my PC/USB dongle could connect to my old router/modem (that doesn't use the 'n' wifi standard), for some reason, my PC won't even recognise/list the new wifi. It's nowhere to be seen on the list of wireless networks, even though the signal is stronger.

What;s strange is that my iPhone and macbook can connect no problem from the same room as my PC.

Would I be right in guessing that my USB dongle doesn't support the 'n' wireless standard and that's why it's not recognising the network? And if so, should I go out and buy an internal wireless PCI card for my PC?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

or you could simply set your router and modem up next to your desktop and use an ethernet cable

Backstabbed, can't do that, it's not practical. Long story.

22 stars, g/b compatibility settings? What are they?

It's annoying, the downstairs desktop recognises it, my phone and laptop recognise it but the desktop that's in the same room as the latter two don't.

Basically i'm going to go out now and buy a PCI card for my pc and hope that works. I really think it's because my USB wireless dongle doesn't work with the 802.11n standard. At least that's what I hope

.11n is a relatively recent standard, so I expect that your adaptor doesn't register it. Seems the most likely situation.

You can get an external or an internal card that supports n. In the meantime you should be able to set your router to broadcast in g.

What everyone else has said, your dongle is a b/g device and your router is set to N only sounds true.

To configure your router to send mixed mode b/g, you can most likely get to it by opening a web browser on your macbook and going to http://192/168.0.1 to get to your routers config page.

Thanks all, the thing is I need the extra range 'n' offers because the previous wifi router signal could hardly reach my bedroom, hence why I bought the new router. So I'll just buy an internal 'n' wireless card for my PC. they're not too expensive.
