Anyone Here Have A Will?

Dayton3

Admiral
Personally, I've never needed one.

My pension lists my wife and daughter as my beneficiaries.

And in this state, all my possessions would pretty much go to them anyway.

I figure if I die before her my science fiction collection becomes one of the largest single collections for sale on ebay in recent history though.

I have a will because I'm single (now) with three adult daughters. Any cash, and investments are divide up into thirds. The Condo and the junk in it, goes to my favorite sister, or the oldest surviving sister. Mainly because my children live in three different states and have no interest in it and have no desire in the hassle of disposing of it from where they live.

I don't have one now. I've thought about it before, but I don't really have any property. I thought about including a provision naming someone to post here should I die so others could know. Aside from that, I don't really care about my property and I'm sure my family would be better at planning my funeral than I would (since they'd be the ones to get the most use out of it).

That's incredibly short sighted. A proper estate plan is not just a will, but also includes a power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney, and in the case of young children, a declaration of guardianship.

That's a start

But the courts would probably have to probate your estate to transfer your assets to your wife. That can cost 3-5% of the gross value of the estate. Having a will in effect bypasses probate and the associated cost.

When you die, somebody decides where your stuff goes. If you have a will, you do. Without one, the court does and will charge you for it.

You probably think the 1x your salary in group life insurance is enough also, don't you?

My husband and I both have wills. We had them drawn up before our first trip to Europe in case the plane crashed or whatever. The kids are grown now, but if you have any assets and/or are parents, you should have one.

Nope. I'm a 25-year old single man with no children, so there doesn't really seem like a point to me having one right now. I assume my family would decide what would happen with all my possessions (which aren't exactly numerous and valuable), and I'm fine with that.

Man am I a buttmunch:mad:

I thought you asked if anyone here has a Wii?

How retarded & rude of me NOT to have read your actual topic Dayton3:brickwall:

But, no, I don't have a will.

What an arse I was before:o

Nintendo Wii:confused:

:wtf: was I thinking:brickwall:

:eek::(

No, I do not. I'm an unmarried 22-year old in good health that doesn't have much real property save for a new car (furniture and such has all been split between myself and my girlfriend purchase-wise). My life insurance through work does have my girlfriend (of five years) listed as the beneficiary, though. When I am married and/or have kids? Of course. Until then I see no need.

I do not have a will as such. However, I have a letter of wishes on file with my employers stating who my death in service benefits would go to and the contents of my pension fund. That would make up the largest part of my "estate" anyway.

I probably need to check on this, but my understanding is that my savings would automatically go to my next of kin which is my mother.

Sounds like it's time to think about getting one.

Correct, in the absence of a will, the "line of succession" if you like determines the benefactor, and the next-of-kin gets your estate. That would be your parents if you are unmarried and have no children.

^Ah, parents. That's something I need to sort out, then. I do not want my father to get anything.

No actual will at the moment, but my family pretty much knows what to do with any possessions/cash I have. I'll have to draw up something at some point, but hopefully I won't be dying for another 50 or so years (women in my family live a long time!).

My parents have wills, of course...but they only updated them when I was in high school. How long had it been? They had a note about "guardianship of our daughter, Katherine"...my older sister, no mention of me! IOW, they hadn't updated since at least 1970!

ETA- I also made my wishes regarding health care (like life support/DNRs) and funeral stuff known. Another thing that needs to be put on paper, just because you never know...

And, that is why its important to have a will! People assume so and so will get what I want them to get, but it does not always work out that way.

My wife and I created a will right after our daughter was born. We both filled out POA's and life wishes as well.

Not yet. I'm only 24 and I don't have any substantial assets like a business or house.

I was hoping my own would hang about for my daugther to browse.

My pension names my daugther as beneficiary, but I really need to get the rest of my affairs in order, I have a reasonably large sum of life insurance to assign for a start.
