Anyone here Geocache?

I work for the Bureau of Land Management, and I read an internal blog post at work today from a one of our state directors who wants to begin a bureau-wide geocaching program. While I've never done it before, I have heard about it and accidentally stumbled upon a cache once in my wanderings. Being interested, I started looking more into it and was very surprised to find that there are actually many caches in my area (I found over 200 listed within 10miles of my college campus alone!! ). I starting to put serious thought into doing this over the summer and was wondering if anyone else here Geocaches? Any fun stories or tips from your adventures?

I used to, when I had a friend with a GPS. Haven't in years, though, unfortunately. It is a lot of fun, and I'd like to get back to it again someday.

There's 3 within 5 miles of where I live, and about 15 in my region which surprised me.

I've never done it, but I have an aunt and uncle who do. I just learned of it last Christmas when they were talking about it.

Last night when I came up with this idea, I thought it was a pretty neat thought. But the longer I've had to sit and think about it, the more excited I've gotten. I really want to start this. It's reaching a point where I'm already planning out which day of the week I can use for searching or what cool trinket I can get to use in cache trades. I really need to slow down and look at the important things.... like getting a GPS first!!

So how does it work?

I understand the treasure hunting part - but do you take anything from the cache, or do you add to it so a collection grows or what?

It varies from cache to cache. Some just have a little notebook and a pencil for you to leave a message. Other times people will leave little trinkets or non-perishable sweets and things for other Geocachers. The general rule is that if you take something, you leave something too, so it can be a good idea to have pen and paper or some little trinkets with you. (Nothing massive, because many caches are in small places, and nothing that's going to damage the environment or pose a threat to local wildlife.)

I used to combine Geocaching with BookCrossing, and leave a book at sites where there was room for a bigger cache (I'm all about rural geocaching).

If you have the time and the tech, you really should give it a go archeryguy1701. It's really good fun.
