Any significance to the differing colors of the crews v neck sweaters?

In TOS, I always wondered if the differing color sweaters were colored in accordance to importance. For instance, the yellow 'v' neck sweaters signified Captaincy? The blue V neck sweaters signified second in command or science officers or Vulcans? The red v neck sweaters etc...
