I want to restart reading fantasy books. The last fantasy books that i read, excluding zombie fiction, was like more than 20 years ago and there were David Eddings books. He was very good at world building but he borrowed heavily from Tolkien and his books are considered full of tropes by today's standards.

So anyone can recommend me any modern day fantasy writer? I have heard of Brandon Sanderson. Is he any good ?

I like high fantasy but i also like the aesthetics of steampunk and dieselpunk.

It might help if you gave a short list of fantasy you have read. If you're already familiar with Tolkien and Lewis for example, then I would recommend Goodkind's Sword of Truth series or Sapkowski's Witcher series. Then there is always A Song of Ice and Fire. But I know that those are basic series for people who read a lot of fantasy. Maybe Weaveworld or something else by Clive Barker--or something by Neil Gaiman? Stephen King's The Dark Tower series or Eye of the Dragon. None of those are High Fantasy but well worth reading.

Here's some recommendations on the Steampunk front:
* His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman
* Mortal Engines by Phillip Reeve
* The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor
* The Leviathan Trilogy (Leviathan, Behemoth, and Goliath) by Scott Westerfeld

And here are some other High Fantasy recommendations:
* The Dragonships of Vindras series by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
* The Dragon Brigade series by Margaret Weis and Robert Krammes
* The Prince of Nothing Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker

Note: The Steampunk series I mentioned are classified as YA (Young Adult) fiction, but they're all excellently written and worth reading regardless of a person's age

Are you only interested in High Fantasy? I haven't really read High Fantasy, but I have read quite a bit of Urban Fantasy if you have any interest there.
