Any Decent Sitcoms Anymore?

Just as an example me and my partner have tried watching several episodes of King of Queens and Two Broke Girls (they're on Comedy Central in repeats - only get a few minutes in before rolling eyes). Yet, watching a Cheers episode tonight I've laughed more in one minute than the entirety of anything witnessed on the previously mentioned shows.

So yeah, go from the title. (Christ, give me a bit of cheesy Married with Children!).

I recently started watching repeats of 'New Girl" on TBS and found it to be pretty funny. I'm not sure how it is now though, as I've not seen any new episodes of it.

"Speechless" is a pretty good new one. "Kevin Can Wait" is like a cross between "King of Queens" and "According to Jim." It's ok, mostly just filler for an otherwise empty night.

We still like "The Middle" and "The Goldbergs."

Black-ish, Speechless, and The Good Life are all enjoyable so far. Black-ish is airing season 3, while the other two are in their first seasons.

If you don't mind something a few years older, give Canada's Corner Gas a try. Truly an underrated series in my mind.

Here's one of my favourite episodes:

I am really going to have to make the effort to catch up with the episodes I've missed.

On broadcast TV:

The Good Place
New Girl
Superstore
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Modern Family
(though it's not nearly as good as it used to be)
The Carmichael Show

On cable or Netflix (some are not sitcoms in the conventional sense):

You're the Worst
Veep
Silicon Valley
Better Things
(a spiritual successor to Louis CK's Louie, co-produced by him, and co-produced and starring Pamela Adlon in the lead)
Archer
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

"You're the Worst" is worth checking out, although I've fallen behind since they moved from FX to FXX. (I swear to God, I didn't even know there was an FXX.)

And I'm still enjoying BIG BANG THEORY, of course.

I find it hard to watch sitcoms these days because they're so staccato and compressed that I feel like I'm watching highlights from last week's episode, but I've seen episodes of Big Bang Theory, Fresh Off The Boat, New Girl, and The Mindy Project and they were all good.

I like Brooklyn Nine Nine and Good Place.

In general I'm not a fan of sitcoms because I don't like or believe the characters. They tend to have this uncomfortable combination of selling themselves as real people the audience is meant to identify with but reacting to things like conservative archetypes rather than how any real person ever would.

The sitcoms I tend to enjoy aren't any more believable but also admit they aren't. Brooklyn Nine Nine admits it's stupid whereas something like Modern Family is just as stupid but pretends to be realistic.

An old one you might not be familiar with is Father Ted. It's brilliant, but not exactly standard sitcom stuff though...
