Antidote to expensive 'coffee table' books

Here's an idea that came to mind last night:
Lots of folks don't like the idea of shelling out $35 to $50 or more for one book that weighs about as much as Webster's Dictionary, right? Well then....

For rare images, how about a series of books along the lines of Bantam Books' old Fotonovels? We could call the series Star Trek Fotorarities, do about the same number of pages per book as those were, pages in color, and have the price per book be the same as a standard paperback or thereabouts.

Of course, this would all be contingent upon Bantam or some other publisher agreeing to do it, and CBS giving the project the go ahead, but what do you all think about the idea of that kind of a format?

I'd rather have them all nicely formatted on big hardbound pages. The Fotonovels are kind of cool as a collectible, but they're far too flimsy to actually, you know, read & enjoy.

There are plenty of rare pics on the internet, available in low-rez format. I'd rather not have them reprinted in another low-quality format.

But that's just me. Others may be excited to purchase them.

I like the hardbacks, but I could do without if it otherwise meant nothing got published.

What about large paperbacks like the last version of the encyclopedia? Could the pages be color and glossy but really thin like onion paper only opaque?
