Anthony Bourdain dies of suicide, CNN reports

Friday, June 08, 2018 06:37AM

Popular television personality Anthony Bourdain has passed away, CNN reports. He was 61.

CNN reports that the cause of death was suicide.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

The network said that his close friend, French chef Eric Ripert, found him unresponsive in his hotel room. Bourdain was in France working on his award-winning CNN series.

If you or someone you know might be at risk of suicide, call 1-800-273-8255 to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

RIP. I feel so sorry for his daughter. :(

For those unfamiliar with Bourdain from his various cooking and travel shows, the most recent being the excellent Parts Unknown on CNN:

What the bloody fuck?!?

Goddamnit - he was one of my all-time favs. I'm stunned.

Wonder what the hell bought that on . . .

RIP. :(

He's talked about his struggles with cocaine and heroin addiction, so I wouldn't be surprised if that played a role.

If you are in the USA the Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-8255.

Don't do it people. I have dated two suicidal guys, it's a bitch, one is better and gets help the other is at least alive last I knew.

I remember him speaking about his past addictions, but I thought he had been able to move beyond his troubles. Condolences to his loved ones.

Yeah, one twitter comment said that, in the last year, he seemed happier than ever. Addiction and depression are tricky things.

R.I.P.

Absolutely heartbroken. Turned on CNN this morning, saw the news, and couldn't believe it. He was my hero, I watched his shows, read his books and wished I could travel along with him. I admired him, his free spirit and his irreverence.

When I saw the headline, I immediately started tearing up--crying like a baby. When the symbol of how to live takes his own life, your own spirit dies a little.

I have a copy of his Les Halles Cookbook. The first sentence of the recipe Poulet Roti begins, "That's Roast Chicken, numbnuts! And if you can't properly roast a chicken, then you are one helpless, hopeless, sorry-ass bivalve in an apron. Take that apron off, wrap it around your neck and hang yourself."

That used to be funny.

What the fuck! :( :scream:
