Hypothetically speaking: The suits agree to a DS9 TV Pilot and the actors of the original agree to come back for the pilot, save Avery.

Would another AA actor be acceptable? Frankly, I don't know how you could have DS9 w/out Sisko and Sisko is AB but for the sake of the question?

Another actor or cast it w/out Sisko?

Probably wouldn't work very well without Avery, unless you rebooted the entire cast. And that would be fun -- I'd start with Denzel Washington as Sisko

Apparently, both Richard Dean Anderson and Bob Urich, Avery Brooks' old cast mate from Spencer For Hire, were both seriously considered. Neither would have been as good. They tried to get James Earl Jones as well. That might have been interesting, but I still think Brooks was the best choice.

Aw man, that would have been awesome! Think of the gravitas James Earl Jones would have brought to the role.

However, I wouldn't want anyone other than Brooks to play the role. Like others have said, he is The Sisko.

If they decided to stick with an African-American actor to play either Sisko or another character, I can think of a few other African-American actors who, at that early date, would've been just fine as Sisko in lieu of Avery Brooks. I like Tony Todd, who played Kurn in TNG and later, the older Jake Sisko in The Visitor. I think he could've pulled it off. -- RR

I think the guy in the commercials is Dennis Haysbert, President Palmer off of 24 (ironically enough, the part of President Palmer's wife was played by Penny Johnson, the same actress who played Kasidy Yates.)

Quite true! Haysbert was recently on a counter-terrorism show called The Unit. Don't know if it was canceled. And Penny Johnson played one of the most ruthless wives in political history in 24 this side of Lucretia Borgia, and was deliciously evil in her portrayal! I don't know, there was something about Brook's trademark shaved head and goatee that made him into pure awesome. That is when he stopped being Commander Sisko and he became The Sisko.

Am I imagining things, or didn't they originally want the guy (forget his name at the moment) who played Bashir to play Sisko?

I'd love to see his take on the character. The actor is quite talented, and can do characters other than good old Bashir.

Also, it is interesting that so few people think of Bashir's actor as a man of color, something I recall Avery Brooks often referred to him (Bashir's actor) as in interviews.

Would be very interesting.

Well, I think since the TOS universe is going to be re-imagined, DS9 could be 're-imagined' as well--hopefully, in a good way--if it ever returned.

If they do get another Sisko, make sure he's attractive (i.e...hot) and a talented actor....(Shoot, they always make sure the guys have their eye candy...)....

James Earl Jones would have just been just awesome, but seriously, would he really want to do weekly syndicated television?
Dennis Haysbert would have been great as well. He had a shaved head and goatee in the Major League movies, so both the hair/no hair looks would have worked just fine. I always thought Avery Brooks just looked wrong with hair.

Hate to say it, but recasting Sisko and no one else is almost asking for trouble. Some people seem to look for racism in everything.

Sisko was missing when we last left DS9. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to keep him missing if Brooks wouldn't do it.
