Anne Rice Trolls Twilight

Vulagr

Commander
"Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun. They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town — anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful."
The response to those four short sentences has been passionate and overwhelming: At the moment, the post has 8,898 "likes" and 1,886 comments — and counting. Though most folks seem to be team Rice ("Your vampires have alot more going for them then those stupid vampires that sparkle"), many bloodsucker enthusiasts have defended Twilight. One wrote, "Twilight is for children, and the vampire chronicles are adult fiction." Another says, diplomatically: "[Rice's] Vampire Chronicles will always be my first love. That being said, I did enjoy the Twilight Saga and I like the new ideas that Stephanie[sic] Meyer has come up with… I personally like the idea that her vampires sparkle in the sunlight." The again, there's this: "Isn't Mr.Cullen technically a pedophile?"

Yes, I would call Edward a pedophile because of the age difference between him and Bella. I say the same thing about Angel and Buffy. Angel is even older. What is it with vampires going after these teens? I also don't understand why most people don't pick up on this and get upset like they do with anybody else who would be a pedophile. Some people get really upset when a nineteen year old boy dates a seventeen year old girl. So I don't really get why this is forgivable or even encouraged.

If she's old enough to have hair down there then he isn't a pedophile. It's a medical term with an exact definition. That exact definition includes the term pre-pubesent.
That being said, repeating high school over and over does suggest a mental process that isn't quite right.

Dealing with truancy officers continually?

In being human there was a ten year old Vampire, who had to be put down by the Vampire community because he wasn't mentally capable of controlling the hunger.

Anne's movie said the same about Kirstin Dunst.

He's old enough to pass for an adult. If he can get the fake IDs necessary to register for school then he can get equally good fake IDs that say he's 18.

Interestingly, the Twilight universe is one where vampires don't need to hide. It would take an airstrike to kill one at best, and when you need to drop bunker buster bombs on single infantrymen you're simply not going to win that war.

Anne Rice books have the same problem due to Power Creep. Lestat could seriously fly around at supersonic speeds burning huge swaths of North America with his pyrokenesis and there's nothing any human military force could do to stop him.

Vampire writers like to have their cake and eat it to, absurdly stroung vampires who by all rights should have conquered the world and enslaved humanity but maintain a pointless masquerade for some inexplicable reason are rather common.

Though Anne Rice does have a good excuse. Absurdly overpowered vamps are rare in her universe and Akasha went to sleep after her empire collapsed.

Twilight, though, makes no sense. The Voltri have no incentive to maintain their masquarade and should have asily conquered the world back when the spear was the height of military technology.

I thought the problem (I took a 4 month respite half way through watching the dvd of Twilight. Awful. Simply awful.) is that once you add sunlight that that the vampires become so irresistibly sexy that everyone want to fuck them.

Imagine if "you" were that sexy, how you could every get anything done?

I love this review I really love it

Umm, pedophilia has nothing to do with the age difference between the protagonist and the child. :wtf:

I suggest you invest in a dictionary.

In popular usage, pedophilia means any sexual interest in children or the act of child sexual abuse, often termed "pedophilic behavior."[2][7][8][9] For example, The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary states, "Pedophilia is the act or fantasy on the part of an adult of engaging in sexual activity with a child or children."[10] This common use application also extends to the sexual interest in and abuse of pubescent or post-pubescent minors.[11][12] Researchers recommend that these imprecise uses be avoided;[11] people who commit child sexual abuse commonly exhibit the disorder,[7][13][14] but some offenders do not meet the clinical diagnosis standards for pedophilia, which only pertain to prepubescents. Additionally, not all pedophiles actually commit such abuse.[15][16][17]

So YOU get a forking clue, and stop being holier than thou.

last time I checked Bella is pubescent. Anyways, treating teens as complete children is a modern concept (Not that I disagree with it).

No, Pingfar is completely right, because what you said is not even supported by the article you quoted to support your argument.

You said "age difference" - by that definition, a 60-year-old dating a 40-year-old is pedophilia.

Even assuming what you probably meant to say but didn't actually say, it's still not pedophilia. As hyzmarca correctly stated, and the article you quoted supports, pedophilia is attraction to prepubescent children, which Bella is blatantly not.

Accusing someone of pedophilia over an attraction to someone younger than them is reactionary hysteria and trivializes the wrongness of actual pedophilia.

Now, to actually be on topic, I have never watched any of the Twilight movies - I have only ever looked at screencaps of the shirtless werewolf boy. But it appears to be well established in many various popular vampire mythologies - Meyer's, Rice's and Whedon's included - that when a person dies and becomes a vampire, then they remain that age forever, physically and emotionally. Edward is not 240 years old or whatever on an emotional level - he's a 19-year-old who's just been around for a long time. That makes this a normal teenage relationship from that persective, not anything even vaguely approaching pedophilia from either angle.

.

The proper social usage is what I'm using, not irrelevant medical terminology. Stop trolling.

Medical terminology IS the proper usage. What you call social usage is inaccurate on the same level as calling anyone who wears a turban a "terrorist."

And I'm not trolling - I'm trying to educate you on something you clearly don't understand. Accusing someone else of trolling is trolling in itself.

.

No it isn't. Correcting a person is incredibly rude and is trolling. The proper use is the social one. Stop being hostile.

In "Interview With A Vampire" Louis turns a young prepubescent five year old girl (Claudia) into a vampire. As time goes by her mental state matures into a young woman and she becomes interested in sex but is torn up because she is stuck in her prepubescent stage and can't have a proper sexual relationship.

I find your attitude and turn of phrase to be somewhat familiar. Have we met?

No. Look dude. You were pretty rude to me, and I didn't appreciate it. If you would've asked instead of being rude to me, I would've revised my statement. Being corrected, especially in such a disrespectful manner, is considered very rude in my neck of the woods. Around here we believe in common courtesy and I would've not corrected you. So I would appreciate it if you please would not correct me in the future in such a manner.

Well Vulgar, the article you quote specifically states that pedophilia is attraction to children who have not hit puberty. Also, what is a 120 Vampire going to do, date a 80 year old women?

And I guess I am a pedophile for being 32 and thinking about asking out a awesome 20 year old girl at church that always says she can't find a date.

Which means you did not read the part I bolded about how it's used normally, not medically.

Stop derailing the thread and being so hostile.

It is generally polite to admit one's mistakes. Maybe next time you can reference a article that doesn't disprove your point of view.
