Anime censorship/regulation bill passes in Japan

So when they say "regulation," do they just mean limiting the availability of this material to minors, or forbidding its sale/creation altogether? Protecting children is fine, but using it as an excuse for censorship is definitely not fine.

From what I understand, this involves removing porn from the general public rack and placing it behind the counter where someone has to ask for it.

The big thing is that this legislation is so vaguely worded that just about anything that isn't a slice of life show could get the 18+ rating and that it ignores the game rating system Japan already has. It's pretty much a blatant attempt to punish otaku culture by a guy who's in bed with the live action TV/movie business and has written novels featuring rape.

Could this mean the end for Tentacle Porn?

No the porn's a separate industry and this bill doesn't cover it because they already censor that stuff in Japan.

This only means the end of some of the more raunchy fanservice series like Queen's Blade and Seikon no Quasar, which I won't miss, though I'll admit I find this bill to be total bullshit since a few of those type of series actually manage to be pretty good. Not to mention they sell well and pay the way for stuff that's better.

Thumbs down for censorship... I say let the artists be artists and don't censor creativity.

No more mainstream anime with busty bouncing high school girls or dismembered people spewing buckets of blood?

Yeah, right...

It was awesome. Sadly this could interfere with another season of it. Either that or they'd just have to tone it down.

Good. All the panty shots and bouncing breasts sound effects got annoying and not a little embarassing very quick. If you're going to have sex and nudity in your production, actually have the balls to do so directly. One way or the other, the production can't help but be improved by removing the snickering, schoolboyish, PG-peep-show.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

(High School of the Dead was way wicked fun...)

But it seems whenever there's an attempt to censor or prohibit something, the demand for it subsequently goes up and it becomes more popular than ever before (alcohol, porn, etc.).

Personally, the most I see coming out of this bill is more shrinkwrapped manga and anime sold with explicit content labels to keep very violent or heavily fanservice-laced material out of the hands of young kids...

Not sure about the custom in Japan, but over here video rental stores and the like are required to keep the adult-only stuff in an area which customers are only allowed to enter once they pass an age check.
That means, if you already look more than old enough you can enter that area without a problem and the rest just has to stop for a few seconds to show their ID card to an employee. The downside is that stores have to implement those checks and reserve a section of the store for that stuff.

see when some friends told me about High School of The Dead and later showed me a clip i told them it was just just fanservice garbage and the target audience was teen boys. but then i sat down and watched it and i really enjoyed it.
