And Now, My True Feelings About Trek XI

I just wonder why they keep trying to make Trek appeal to the masses so much. .
Because they are a company operating in a free market economy who want to get the most profit out of their commodity? Because they are not in the business of keeping one tiny subset of the population happy? Because they saw what X-Men, Spider-Man, Transformers, Lord of the Rings, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, etc can make for a studio and want a piece of the action?

The more important question is why do hardcore fans feel that a movie studio shouldn't try to get the maximum return on their investment by aiming their product at the broadest possible audience?

Because they won't be "special" anymore. They won't be part of the "select few" who truly "understand" what's "real". They'll have to share their precious, jealously guarded sacred cow. The same thing happens to music groups all the time, for example.

Yep, that's pretty much right. I don't know why some people have a problem with Trek having mass appeal. Just because it appeals to more people than a core fanbase doesn't mean it's going to be diluted down to nothing. That certainly can happen, but until it does, I'm not going to pass judgment. I think they're approaching this in the right way from what I've seen.

However, if this thing ends up looking like a fucking music video (to borrow your band analogy) I'll quickly change my tune. I think that's unlikely, though.

I'm posting from the office, so I don't have time to hunt down links, but TPTB have been trying forever to make something that will appeal to a wider/different audience. Every time something new comes out, that's part of the things they crow about. "It's gonna be great! Millions of people are going to come watch. Fans'll like it too, I guess, but that's not the main factor."

Enterprise didn't even have Star Trek in the title. That's how far they were willing to go in order to attract newbies. Now, I'm not saying attracting new fans is a bad thing - but let's stay with the right target audience. Endless tinkering with the Trek brand is what got us to this point.

What was said was what was said... What they did though was retread stories and stay with the formula that worked with trek.

Abrams is getting beef for doing the exact opposite, saying It will be Trek as you know it, and giving us something new and fresh..

So why we mad at him for lying to us when we've been lied to for years??
