An open letter apology to Karl Urban!

At the time of casting, I was extremely open about my perception of the mistake Abrams made casting Urban as our favorite country doctor. I kept thinking of his numerous wooden, two dimensional characters devoid of any real personality or charm. I even went so far as to dub him "movie cancer".

Mr. Urban, you did a wonderful job capturing the personality and essence of Dr. McCoy! That is all.

I too thought Urban was a questionable choice when I first heard it and I was wrong. So so so very wrong. Karl Urban was magnificent.

I loved Urban's performance! I'm looking forward to seeing him get some more screen time in the sequel.

Also, can anyone remember the exact lines about his ex wife which inspire his nickname?

"She took the whole damn planet in the divorce. All she's left me with are my bones."

I think. This is from a day and a half ago. I won't be seeing it again until this Saturday. Maybe someone else has the exact lines.

I agree that he was excellent, I'm struggling to think of anyone whose performance was better.

That's close enough. It might have been "All I've got left are my bones."

Karl Urban did great as Dr. McCoy! In fact, out of all the actors, Urban's was the most accurate portrayal of the character.

Karl Urban's Doc was my favorite character followed closely by Scotty. They had a way of stealing the show in when they were in their respective scenes.

Absolutely. The single most counter-intuitive bit of casting in the whole movie ended up being the single most accurate one. (Although it's weird seeing McCoy's trademark crankiness coming out of such a young man.)

I know he usually picks terrible roles, but having seen Urban in the kiwi-indie flick Out of the Blue, I wasn't surprised at how good he was in a not-terrible part.

McCoy was always my favourite character, so I was hoping Urban would do it well - and he did.

I wasn't sure about Urban myself as all I could remember him from was Doom (and thats not exactly a five star film) but my mind changes as soon as I saw clips of him and was astonished he pulled it off so well when I first saw the film.

He was fucking fantastic as bones. Really, really sold it and was just plain awesome.

I loved the moment where he cursed Spock under his breath and just his acerbic wit.

"Congratualtions, you're now Chief Medical Officer."
"Tell me something I don't know!"

I mean, wow. Fantastic performance.

I thought he did a great job.

And thanks to the OP. Good to hear you enjoyed his performance, despite your original apprehension.
