A couple who survived Cyclone Tracy have described how they fought Victoria's killer bushfires by spraying the flames with cans of soft drink.
Peter and Wendy Crooke spent 25 years in Howard Springs, on the outskirts of Darwin, before moving to Kinglake, north-east of Melbourne, two years ago.
Kinglake is one of the communities worst hit by the bushfires, with at least 35 people killed.
Mr Crooke says using soft drink to fight the fire was not part of the couple's safety plan, but it helped save their house when their hose stopped running just after a fireball came over their roof.
"Our normal fire management plan went out the door ... it just happened in an instant almost," he said.
"There was virtually no warning at all. This fire just came through at such a enormous rate.

Way to go, Pepsi. Good thinking under preesure by Mr Crooke.
