An excellent use of Pepsi

A couple who survived Cyclone Tracy have described how they fought Victoria's killer bushfires by spraying the flames with cans of soft drink.
Peter and Wendy Crooke spent 25 years in Howard Springs, on the outskirts of Darwin, before moving to Kinglake, north-east of Melbourne, two years ago.
Kinglake is one of the communities worst hit by the bushfires, with at least 35 people killed.
Mr Crooke says using soft drink to fight the fire was not part of the couple's safety plan, but it helped save their house when their hose stopped running just after a fireball came over their roof.
"Our normal fire management plan went out the door ... it just happened in an instant almost," he said.
"There was virtually no warning at all. This fire just came through at such a enormous rate.

Rest of story here

Way to go, Pepsi. Good thinking under preesure by Mr Crooke.

Did you know that the absorbent material in diapers could be used to fight fires? http://www.firefightingnews.com/article.cfm?articleID=13801

That is very interesting. I wonder how biodegradable it is.

Thee is this heartwarming video of a little survivor of the bushfires in case some people haven't already seen it. I believe it has been shown on news reports all over the world.

He actually is a she and was taking to a wildlife shelter where she is being treated for burns. A spokeswoman for the shelter has said

She is lovely — very docile — and she has already got an admirer. A male koala keeps putting his arms around her. It will be a long road to recovery, but she should be able to be released back into the wild in about five months."

I think it is amazing that a wild animal could be sio trusting (or more likely in shock and desperate).

I've not seen the video, but is "she" a female koala? If so, do they need to release her back into the wild or is there a chance of her and the male koala becoming mates?

Yes, she is a female koala. We don't know why the male koala is in the refuge, maybe they plan to reease him someday as well. Koalas don't form enduring partnerships, theya re usually solitary animals.

Because if they were dropbears the firemen would have mysteriously disappeared.

So not only is 99% of life Down Under highly poisonous it is apparently very very flammable too.

That doesn't take away from the enormity of the situation... puts the American wildfires in perspective.
