An American Doctor?

Apologies if this a repeat, but the first episode of the fan produced Dr. Who: Alternate Empire is available on You Tube.

The Doctor is played by Julian Bane whom some of you may know from his stellar work as the sinister General Brahms in the Star Trek: Excelsior audio series.

Julian has a great look and for those who like female hawtness Caroline Morahan should do quite nicely, thank you!

Check it out here.

That was actually pretty good, except for K9. Really, they should have just left him out.

I'm sure some folks would agree, but then I think a lot of viewers felt that way about K-9 during his first run on the original series. When it comes to K-9 even among Whovians YMMV.

What I disliked was not the fact that they included K9, but rather how he was executed. The scratch-built look I might be able to deal with, but the voice is just wrong.

^^^Fair enough. I hope you took a moment to post that as a comment on YouTube. While I have no involvement in Alternate Universe, I can tell you that in my experience the people behind fan productions are hungry for feedback and very much appreciate it when someone takes a moment to offer praise and/or constructive criticism.

Acting was fine but god the whole love thing was so ugh and forced. The british reason kept that stuff at arms length for a reason felt like an odd way to make the 1st episode ? No much introduction it felt like I jumped halfway into a novel.

I can never get past production values on fan stuff they always put me off. I agree K9 was awful :p

I thought this was going to be a post asking if fans would tolerate an 'official' American Doctor - a bit like the ones that regularly turn up about James Bond.

Yeah, not only is K9 utterly immobile, that voice is just...wrong.

The rest of it's OK though, the Doctor and companion seem like the Doctor and companion and that alien seems quite nuWho.

that was not bad, not sure what even made them think, that K9 was worthwhile, I dont FanFilms are not big budget affairs but really they couldnt get a remote control K9 from eBay?

The fan film is off to a great start! K9 looks hokey, sure, but the rest of it works well for me, and I can ignore K9 since most of the other elements of the film worked so well.

As for why K9 is in the story, it's pretty clear that, if he weren't there, then Samantha would have to talk to herself while she's watching the Doctor outside the TARDIS.

I don't understand all the bit at the beginning about the incarnation in the future who Samantha met. Is this something that has been established somewhere before (another film? The novels? Audio adventures?) Or is this something that will be revealed here as the story unfolds? I think we could have done with a bit of clarity there so there are a bit more hints as to where this comes from (or is going to).

Other than that I think this is a great effort. K9 doesn't even bother me!

I quite like the Doctor, too. I think there's something Doctor-ish in him. By that, I mean that the actor conveys something that is trustworthy in the character, that he's essentially a good man. That's something, that if I can see in a Doctor, usually sells it to me. The American accent doesn't bother me, and although there might have been a couple of American phraseologies that threw me a bit, the accent didn't bother me.

On the question of "an American Doctor?" my gut reaction has always been "no" (I'm the same with Bond). But I like to think I have an open mind and I'd be prepared to watch, as I watched this. I think, for me, it isn't an "American Doctor" that I am skeptical about, but a Doctor who isn't British. I think there are certain things, the essence of which stem from and possily embody British culture that could be integrel to the character. (I'm thinking Bond, Who, The Avengers, maybe The Prisoner). But I'm always prepared to be proved wrong... (or right!:p)

I took the opening dialogue as filling the backstory of this Doctor. I would think doing a transformation scene would be a huge problem all the way from the SFX angle to finding an actor to play the earlier Doctor. And which earlier Doctor?
