As an alternative premise for the movie, suppose the 24th-century Federation Council, the Starfleet brass, and heads of governments of various Federation worlds had all been replaced by changelings, and Spock decided to freejack copies of Kirk's landing party (including all the TOS regulars) from the transporter buffer of the TOS Enterprise and use a holodeck computer to adjust their physical appearances so they wouldn't be recognized as well-known historical Starfleet officers (also allowing a new, young cast to play those characters), simply because he felt those were people he could trust.
This is aboard a derelict Steamrunner-class starship, and their first order of business is to repair it, and in the process get up to speed on some 24th-century tech and catch up on history. Then the whole team, lead by Spock and his younger self go off on an adventure to expose
the evil changelings and set things right, in the meantime creating a bit of fun as the TOS crew members see more and more of the 24th century.
The original timeline would not be affected, because those were transporter copies, and the look and feel of Star Trek could have been preserved.
