Amy - A Massive Step Backwards?

StCoop

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
So three episodes in and I'm afraid to have to say that I'm finding Amy to be a totally one-dimensional character.

She's obsessed with the Doctor and looks nice in a mini-skirt and that's it really.

Moffat has made no real effort to make her a real person and seems to be far more interesed in giving her one-liners. And Gatiss basically sidelined her for his episode until she saves the day (again) in a scene than RDT would have been crucified for.

She's taken to the life of a Companion with far too much ease and seems completely blase about the whole thing.

Very disappointing really.

I've starting to wonder if Amy Pond is real. She could be a fantasy construct, but whose? The Doctor's? The TARDIS's? The season's Big Bad, whomever that might be?

Feel free to elaborate. Tell me about Amy Pond, without referring to her relationship with the Doctor. Or using the word "feisty"...
Growing up, Amy was the only Scottish girl in an English village named Leadworth.
She never lost her accent.
Her aunt Sharon raised her.
She's very trustful of total strangers.
She's a kissogram.
She's willing to lie to further her goals.
At one point, she had a boyfriend named Rory.
She's not overly impressed by figures of authority.
She has a very vivid imagination and seems to be a very creative person.
She's getting cold feet about getting married.
She doesn't mind openly looking at men when they're changing clothes.
She seems to adapt very quickly to new situations and circumstances.

I could go on. We know lots of things about here considering we've seen her in only three episodes.

Mmh, I must admit I sort of agree with the OP, though I wouldn't have said it so dramatically. While it's true that we've learned various facts about her, I, too, feel she's a bit 'light-weight', lacking 'screen presence' so far. But it's still early days. I did like child Amy better. That would have been a cool idea to have her as the companion.

I think there is alot more to do than simply being "feisty" her ability to see the star whale as being kind, and thinking she could use the Dalek tec against them, were both very clever.

My own thoughts were the whale was a child itself, and I didnt think to use the Dalek tec against them, however that could be to do with the fact I never would have thought they could have used the tec mentioned earlier in the episode, like they did.

As for her short skirts, TBH I was more distracted by the girls in RAF blues than Amy.

Totally agreed. Amy is a perfectly fleshed character within three episodes. How much did we really know about Rose by The Unquiet Dead? How deeply did we understand Martha by The Shakespeare Code?

And, in the end, even if I actually cared about the companion's development that much (I don't), the show is called Doctor Who. The companion is secondary, unless you are RTD and need to exercise some Mary Sue muscles... ;)

You guys put more effort into this than I would have.

Frankly I have no idea how the OP could possibly reach the conclusion that he did.

Some things leave me so baffled that a quick one liner is all I can muster.

She also doesn't remember the Daleks and the Planets in the Sky.
That alone makes her very special.

Sure. I didn't mention that because that revelation is all about plot, and the OP was worried about Amy as a character.

I'm not sure how much character development the OP expects within three episodes, and frankly Amy feels more rounded than Rose or Martha did by this point.

I think that there is more to Amy Pond then meets the eye.... I think that is the reason she seems a bit 'disconnected' from previous new series companions.

^That avatar is wigging me out, Tim...

GOD No. The actress is doing a FANTASTIC job in this part. I've seen the first episode 3 times now and the next two once each. I can't keep my eyes off of her... and I don't care for redheads. All I can say is watch her face.... watch her face. It says volumes as to what she is thinking. I also love her accent and voice. Most actors/actress look like they are just saying the lines with a fake smile... She comes across to me as totally real.

I like Amy better than any companion other than Rose, and she does have a few points in her favor even there.

She's more immediately assertive and insightful than previous companions, but then she's the first one who's spent her life since the age of seven psyching herself up to travel around with this goofy superhuman...

I don't know how good of a companion she'll be when its all said and done. All I know is that I'm still firmly in the completely and utterly taken by Karen stage. That and Amy will end up being better than Martha.
