AMT Star Trek Kits Molded in Funky Colors

Ok...kit builders...specifically, kit builders of yesteryear:

I know this is a weird thread...and my humble apologies for that...but:

Did anyone ever have an AMT model kit that was molded in a funky color? I've had friends who had Klingon D-7 kits that were molded in STRANGE colors. I frackin kid you not!

One friend had one that was molded in LIME GREEN. The same friend also had one molded in a POWDER BLUE. Yet another friend had one molded in BLACK! Yes BLACK!!!! And this friend, since he was building a fleet, bought another that was OLIVE GREEN! Yep...you read this correctly. Lime Green, Powder Blue, Black, and Army Olive Green!

We put firecrackers (1975-76 era Black Cats to be exact) in the lime green one and blew it up. Blew it up real good! Abel style! Blew the nacelles clean off of it...

But, it had it comin' considering it was lime green. No self respecting D-7 is lime green. Thus, it was exploded. I guess we could have painted it, but we were too frackin' lazy at the time -- or didn't have the paint we needed -- something silly like that. Or maybe we just wanted to see how kewl (way back before the word cool was spelt this way...) it would look. Either way...you guessed it. We blew it up. It was begging for it.*

Just like in that pre-production painting of V'ger blasting the Klingon ship that you can see at Forgotten Trek.

Anyway, all the ones I ever had were molded light gray, but anyway...just curious:

What's the wonkiest color your Trek kit was molded in? The kits I described were released mid to late 70's so this might be something they did because they ran out of gray tint...I dunno.

But, it was just nuts. Stark. Raving. Looney Toons.

And it's all real.

*Since we were on a roll, we also blew up a Romulan Bird of Prey, a Mark Nine Hawk (from Space:1999) and the Space:1999 Alien Car. Blew up real good!

I remember having a ''Star Trek'' 6 Klingon battlecrusier that had a ''Light Lime Green'' Color. Of course I painted it a ''Gloss Dark Green'' and it looked cool! Of course being that I ''played'' with my model it did not last long. But it died a much ''GLORYESS'' death.

I remember an AMT kit for the D-7 (circa 1970?) which was close to what's labeled "Tea Green" on this chart -- sort of a pale green, instead of the usual slate-gray of most kits from that time.

I'd like to know what they were thinking molding those in that hideous color (and the other hideous colors)!

Of course, if you're going to paint the thing it doesn't really matter I suppose...

M, I know what you mean about the "Gloryless" death. I had a ST:TMP K'Tinga that I was really proud of; that I thought I did a great job on. Nice paint job...pretty darned accurate. I sat it on my bed one day to get something out of the closet and my sister comes in and plops down right on it. Snapped the neck right in half and broke the nacelles off!

Man was I pissed!

My sister still talks about that...err...Incident.

They make them in colors is so that they don't need to be painted for the kids who are too young, lazy or have paranoid parents who don't want the kids to get dirty. Any self-respecting modeler will paint it regardless of what color the plastic is.

I don't mean to laugh dude, but that is one hell of a funny story! Just be glad it was your sister that dealt the ''Death'' blow and not you! I had the AMT ST:tng ''Enimies of the Federation 3-pack'' with the ''Ferengi, klingon,romulan warships'' And I left my ''Klingon Bop on the floor and accedentaly stepped on it! I was upset to say the least, it was my Favorite ship of that set!

I believe I've read on modeling forums that there was a time when AMT was saving money by injecting the Trek kits with whatever left-over plastic was laying around at the time.

Well, with mine, I managed to glue it all back together, but she was never quite the same after that. She, meaning the K'Tinga...

The OTHER "she" was probably glad I did not have a bat'leth that day...or one of those Klingon knives with the triple blades...lol!!!
