I've been watching a lot of TNG lately and it was mentioned Starfleet Academy holds an annual Sadie Hawkins dance which I'd never heard of and it turned out to be some bizarre American thing that I think is okay to retcon out. On top of being exclusively a reference for the American audience the idea behind it is a bit outdated.
A Sadie Hawkins dance is one where the women ask the guys to be their dates (it's usually the other way around):
