American Horror Story: Roanoke (Season 6)

The 6th season of American Horror Story, titled Roananoke, premiered last night.
After months of successful secrecy the premiere episode of the new season of America Horror Story finally revealed the new theme and story for the season. It is based around a ghost story tied in to the dissapearance of the American Colony of Roanoke Island.
The season is being presented as a documentary series called "My Roanoke Nightmare", with some of the cast playing the "real people" telling their story, and some of the cast playing the characters in "reenactments".
I haven't actually watched the premiere yet, so this is all off of the Wikipedia article and the preview they posted to the FX Youtube page.
Returning cast:
Kathy Bates as ? (no character listed on Wikipedia, but from the preview she appears to be a Roanoke colonist)
Sarah Paulson as Shelby Miller (reenactor)
Lily Rabe as Shelby Miller
Denis O'Hare as ? (no character listed)
Wes Bently as ? (no character listed)
Even Peters as ? (no character listed)
Angela Basset as Lee
New cast:
Cuba Gooding Jr. as Matt Miller (reenactor)
Andre Holland as Matt Miller

I've started watching Coven, Freak Show, and Hotel but have yet to finish any of them, but I hope to make it all the way through this season. My not finishing is not due to lack of interest, it's just that the episodes tended to be up for a short time on Hulu, and it was one that I tended to put aside for other shows until it was to late.
Now that Coven and Freak Show are up on Netflix I plan on finishing them that way.

first episode was ok. i like the documentary style set up. pretty standard spooky house type stuff. Roanoke Island is something i've been interested in since i was a kid so i'm curious to see how this plays out.

I never understood the "mystery" of Roanoke. It was clearly just a message they left to tell them where they went/who they left with after feeling they were abandoned and left to die. The only mystery is figuring out where/who Crotoan was. (Which isn't too hard to guess given a certain region of blue-eyed and blonde Amerinds to the west of Roanoke.)

Sorry to go slightly off topic for a second, but for those who watch the show regularly, which season is considered the best? Of the three I've seen parts of, Coven was my favorite.

Asylum
Murder House
Freakshow
Coven

I didn't care for Hotel. It just wasn't the same without Jessica Lange. Plus, it was too gruesome for me.

The first episode of Roanoke was reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project, and I gathered the impression it was also trying to promote the new Blair Witch movie, especially with those twig figures.

That was a decent beginning. I like the format.

As for past seasons, I would rank them:

Asylum
Hotel
Murder House
Freak Show
Coven

Although I honestly liked them all, so it's relative...

I like the idea of the format for the new season. I can understand why they tried to keep it secret. I'm not sure where they are going with it, but based on past seasons I don't think the writers do either.

I just watched the first episode and I enjoyed it. I liked the fact that his one was going more for just overall creepyness than the nastyness that they went for on Hotel. While I did enjoy it overall, I thought they did go a little overboard with the nasty stuff at times in Hotel. The whole documentary spin is nice little twist on the usual set up.
I'm trying to figure if the people are ghosts of something else, because judging by the way Shelby hit Kathy Bates, she seemed pretty solid for a ghost.

It has the look of those tv ghost shows like Ghostly Encounters and Paranormal Survivor where the person talks about their experience and actors "reenact" that experience. I have the feeling that this will turn out to NOT be what is actually going on.

Leonard Nimoy's In Search Of... The Lost Colony Of Roanoke

Interesting to see many list Asylum as one of their top seasons. For me that's the one I stopped watching after 3 episodes. It was a little too disturbing for me, in a not-entertaining-just-uncomfortable sort of way. I think that's because it's the one that feels most "realistic" to me, knowing that horrific tortures really did occur to people who did not deserve it in such places makes me feel sick.

I haven't seen Hotel yet, but the others I would rank:

Murder House
Coven
Freak Show
Asylum

I liked my cable categorization of AHS:
