Amazon Prime’s The Cloud Minders 16X9

Didn’t see this mentioned lately, but Amazon Prime’s remastered version of The Cloud Minders presents the remastered effects in 16X9 widescreen. However, it’s very jarring with the majority of the episode still in 4X3, including with overlays of the new effects. This appears to be the only episode presented in this format. The rest appear to all be in 4X3, as the remastered Cloud Minders is on Netflix.

IIRC, the effects were rendered in 16:9, then cropped to 4:3 for most releases. Though when the episodes were sold on Xbox Live way back when, they actually had the 16:9 effects.

Also most Broadcast TV since 2012/13 airs TOS-R in 16x9, with the live-action cropped to 16x9. Prior to that, from 2006-12, TOS-R was released to syndication in 480i 4x3. If any station is airing the series in 4x3 now, they are probably using their tapes from 15 years ago.

What country are you in? I'm in the U.S., and I've only seen straight 4x3 airings. Currently it airs on the MeTV network on Saturday nights.

Let me tell you, I'd be unhappy with a phony 16x9 cropping of a show that was composed for 4x3.

I’m in Canada. In the last 9 years the only 4x3 broadcast that I saw of TOS, and it was with the original effects, was “Mudd’s Women” on AMI, but that channel is designed to assist people who are hard of sight (edit: not hearing, tired when I posted this), so the broadcast had someone over dubbed telling what was going on, so I think that’s why AMI was still airing the 60’s version since those over dubs were probably done years ago and they wouldn’t reflect the changes in TOS-R.

Otherwise, “CTV’s SCI-FI” (formerly SPACE) has been airing TOS-R in the cropped 16x9 versions where everything is 16x9. Otherwise, the last time I saw a 4x3 broadcast of TOS-R was like 2010/11. Of course I’m surprised that Bell didn’t request 16x9 copies of TNG-R. And Bell also airs DS9 & Voyager in up-converted 1080i, so their SD channel features down-converted video for DS9 & Voyager—-so sometimes it’s interesting since on the SD channel you’ll see DS9 & Voyager in a 16x9 letterbox, while other times it’ll be full 4x3. Since TNG, DS9 and Voyager are the only shows on CTV’s Sci-Fi that are in 4x3, (and DS9 & Voy are the only SD shows) while the rest of their shows are 16x9 HD.

In an unrelated aberration I was watching some Star Trek episodes on Netflix (in New Zealand) and Obsession has the original special effects. Sadly The Immunity Syndrome did not. I'll go back to watching the low def DVD's now.
