Or am I the only one foolish to admit it? I'm suprised there hasn't been a thread started, so I decided to start one.
Overall, I thought the movie wasn't as bad as I feared. It doesn't take itself seriously at all. It came across like a parody of comic books/comic book films, with a lot of overacting and bad dialogue on purpose, hopefully. It copied Sin City's visual style, though I think there was more color in the Spirit, and more of a straightforward plot.
Samuel L. Jackson stole the show and had a lot of fun. Scarlett Johansen affected this overbored persona as his henchwoman. Gabriel Macht did a good job as the hero, spouting out corny lines. And Eva Mendes was smoking, four alarm fire hot. Never looked better on film, and she even had a brief nude scene.
It was a silly, weird film that doesn't deserve all the hate it's received IMO. However, it's not as good as The Dark Knight, Iron, or Incredible Hulk. I think the characters had more zest than those in Hellboy 2. I also liked it better than Wanted, due to I just thought the loom was a stupid idea. I also thought it was better than Punisher, mainly because Jigsaw and Looney Bin Jim were such lackluster villians. The Spirit pretty much falls in the middle of the comic films this year on my list.
My ranking of 2008 comic-related films.
1. Iron Man
2. Dark Knight
3. Incredible Hulk
4. The Spirit
5. Punisher War Zone
6. Wanted
7. Hancock
8. Hellboy 2
Please, let the discussion/debate begin.
