Am I getting Older or are the "kids" from Skins Getting Worse?

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Skins

The first bunch were imps.

The middle lot were off their trolley.

This new group are animals mucking in their own filth.

I'm not so old that I can't understand "Kids" (in the real world) but these monsters make me want to get my tubes tied.

All they do is consume and destroy.

Thery're all but spent and Jaimie is probably ready to herd a new function of cattle into his studio and turn them into cartoons of terrorporn.

No, you're not delusional. You're not suffering from a generational condition of amnesia.

The brutal truth is, this is the least creative and intellectually fertile generation of young people in perhaps centuries.

Consider: what generation in living memory has produced no major new musical genres, no major subcultures, or artistic trends?

The answer is, none. None until this generation. The youth of today have substituted the Apple devices and social networking sites made by others (principally people from the previous two generations) for the popular culture they have not produced as their forebears did.

In their defence... The older generations haven't gone away anywhere.

They're not dying or fading away.

There's no room for the children to breathe.

Most kids today, their grand parents did heroin at a Rolling Stones Concert in the 60s and have tickets to another Rolling Stones concert next week...

But you're right.

however?

Information is being stored better.

The previous generations had to create their own identity because there was no known example to lead them. they'd look to their parents and just ass dead soulless eyes worn down by 40 year of work for minimum wage.

My 15 year old found out about Jim Morrison a few months back and went gaga over all that, then he moved onto Alice Cooper, then Black Sabbath and then back to minecraft.

Creation is the response to a vacuum.

Creation over the top of a non vacuum is destruction.

They're weeping because there are no new worlds to conquer.

I on the other hand just finished watching the pilot to Hill Street Blues (Yes, the original. Is there a remake I should know about?) for the first time ever and it seems the older generation in the 1980s thought that Kids were gun toting junkies back then as well.

The first lot of Skins was done well, second lot didn't work as well but had its moments. This lot though was crap from the word go.

I think they writers are struggling to capture what made the first lot work and out do it. When the truth is they don't need to out do it they just need to continue similar stories of kids growing up.

Have any of you seen the American version?

It's been so lon...

The series generated controversy in the United States over its sexual content, in which several advertisers withdrew and there were some accusations of child pornography since many of the actors were under the age of 18. On June 9, 2011, MTV announced that they would not renew Skins for a second season, with a statement that "Skins is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn't connect with a US audience as much as we had hoped".[5][6]
Quite cancelled.

I doubt the UK version as it stands now would last a few minutes in the the Us's ultra conservative market place...

i was watching Suburgatory today and a character being played by Chris Parnel from Archer, was doing his happy dance, followed by the paranoid two step we're all prone to before masturbation, but we really really don't want to be caught... While singing "Oh Hank, Hank Moody, who are you going to bone today, Hanky Hanky Hank Hank..." and looking for the remote control when he's stymied by forgetting the parental lookout on the cable box.

A country that allows the continuing production of Californication can't abide a cheap knock of a global carcrash?

I am absolutely astounded that anyone could claim with a straight face that the numerous new forms of artistic expression offered by the emergence of the Internet and the "Web 2.0" phenomenon don't qualify as new artistic trends. And by the claim that there are no new major subcultures.

The "kids" (from Skins) I'm complaining about were born in the mid 90s.

These monsters are younger than Friends.

Who born when is Talosian exactly complaining about?

The kids in the show are written by adults. The idea that this somehow reflects the laziness of current adolescents is ridiculous; it's not a documentary.

It could be a documentary.

Never bothered to look this up before byt the writer creators Jaime and Bryan are a father and son writing team born respectively 1985 and 1961.

After Jedi and before Doctor Who.

No wonder the parents and children seem to be at war.

Maybe Jaimie's children should think about stepping up for next season?

Kids always make stupid decisions.

These fictional characters don't seem to anticipate "consequences".

No real child would act like this without weighing up life imprisonment, or execution as a consequence of being an unremitting asshole... But of course most of them do for a little bit.

They usually have a group of young writers on the show, at least from the second or third series.

I agree about saying there's no new cultural trends, sub-cultures or musical genres is just stupid or at the very least not very culturally aware.

Not having seen the show i can only guess but i'm pretty sure that these kids were either chosen because of the severity of their character, i. e. how fucked up they are or it is entirely scripted and passed off as real events.

Either case it was like this for centuries and millennia throughout human history.. every older generation has lamented about those that come after them and that they will ruin civilization and it hasn't happened and i guess it won't happen now.

What has changed is that we have faster and more widespread media now leading to the impression that there are only idiots out there when in fact the media chooses this small group and over-represents them because they are the most "interesting" to watch and generate the most viewers.. who wants to watch a show about well educated, well behaved kids who are on their way to become very productive members of society?

… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.

Juvenal. 100 AD.

Loved the first series, liked the second, loved the third, hated the fourth, got an episode and a half into the fifth befoe quitting. At the time it was cathartic. My mother's pretty liberal so I had nothing to rebel against. Watching Skins was a chance to live that life vicariously. Now I'm a third year uni student. The appeal's gone.
